I have carried a pocket knife almost all my life. My Dad always had either a sheath or pocket knife on him and it rubbed off on me. I think my first pocket knife was a 3 blade Boy Scout knife, although my first knife was a small sheath knife w/ a compass in the handle(dull as sh-t). I've had many over the years and one of my favorites was a Buck Muskrat (pre-China). Had it for 30 years before it went missing. Currently carrying an Opinel #8 but that could change depending on my mood.

That reminds me,  there was a time in early 2000s that I carried a sheath knife with a compass in the handle too. I carried it twice in the field and then retired it to the shelf. Way to heavy/bulky and if I'm being honest , expensive at the time. It's a Randall fish and fowl, I think, with awesome stag handle. It's in the picture below with a repost of what I carry now, an Esse Izula. Not nearly as exciting to carry but a major 11oz lighter and lays super flat. Unnoticeable, and does the exact same thing as the Randall, until I get lost of course!

Speaking of Randall's, one the the knives my Dad left me was a 6" Model 5 Camp knife. Beautiful blade and sheath but as you said a little heavy to carry in the field.

I carry a small rosewood handled 2blade jack knife from Old Timer that I bought as part of a 3 knife kit in 2017 because I lose them.  I'm still on #1 so I guess I jinxed myself by buying a 3 pack.  It has "limited edition" on the blade so I feel fancy.  LOL.
