How many people use the same shotgun for everything ? How many of you have one or more guns setup for turkey hunting ? Remington 870 12 gauge, Mossberg 500 12 gauge, Benelli M1 super 90 - 12 gauge and last years build youth 870 20 gauge. I also have my first turkey gun Browning A5 - 12 gauge 32 inch full it's retired... I have a couple of Remington 1100 for dove and rabbit...
one for turkey, one for deer, one for grouse
One for turkey, a different one for quail and dove.
One dedicated for turkey, one dedicated for deer and a few other choices for everything else.
If I was a waterfowler I'd probably have one dedicated for that too. :fud:
I consider myself pretty not gun poor. Have 5-6 guns w turkey chokes always screwed in. Today's loads often require guns be sighted to loads/chokes. I don't mess w that.
I've used almost exclusively a 835, now I've set up a 37. My daughter uses my 11-87.
Used to use a 870 n sp-10 as well.
Also setting up a 20 ga Benelli. My older daughter had a 20 11-87 that little sis now uses.
For small game i use one of several 28 ga.
This all being said certainly a gun can be used for everything just need to bear in mind the resigning thing, turkey guns n loads often shoot a little off
I have several strictly for Turkey, but mainly always use one. Besides those i have two 12.g muzzleloaders for turkeys. Couple 12g. Rems with cantilever barrels setup for deer hunting. Couple Ars and a Savage bolt for coyotes and a few Benellis for pheasant, ducks, and geese. Bunch of other safe Queens I bought that I don't need along with some of the ones mentioned, but at the time i couldn't help myself.
One shotgun setup just for turkey hunting, one shotgun for deer hunting (with scope), one shotgun for small game and duck hunting.
I have 3 shotguns, but I pretty much shoot by Benelli SBE2 all the time for waterfowl and turkeys. It has a 26 inch barrel and has been an awesome gun for me.
Two dedicated to turkeys (12g & 20g), and several others dedicated to everything else (squirrel, rabbit, shooting skeet, etc).
All of my turkey guns are only used on turkeys.
The same 870 is used for turkey, small game and waterfowl and it shows. Deer however is my trusted 11-87.
This thread is fairly new but it seems most guys have dedicated turkey guns. Shows some of the dedication on this forum to turkey hunting. I'd bet the average hunter prob more often has the one or two guns for all
Well no shotgun deer season hear in PA and so yes one gun 11-87 turkey, geeses, ducks, grouse.
One for turkey and one for deer and one for every thing else.
One gun dedicated for turkey, one dedicated for deer hunting and several others for anything else.
I have a Benelli SBE2 and a Mossberg 835 I use for turkey/predators. I also have a Remington 1100 20ga for cottontail/hare.
Same gun since I started

X2
One 870 SPS turkey for a dedicated turkey gun, one cantilever rifle barreled 870 (even though oklahoma doesn't have a shotgun season for deer), beretta auto for ducks and crows, benelli nova as a back up duck and crow gun, 870 express magnum as a backup backup, and I'm looking into getting an auto 20 gauge for dove this season. Shotgunning/wingshooting is next best thing for me after turkey hunting, and for me i'll never have too many shotguns. :you_rock:
One turkey gun and one deer gun. Have some for the kids and my wife and a few hand me downs that don't get used much. Don't see the point in having a bunch of guns. Waste of money in my opinion. Can only use one at a time.

I have 3 shotguns, and I use them all for everything.
1 for waterfowl, 1 for sporting clays, and 1 for turkeys. But I'm shopping for another dedicated turkey gun to replace my 870.
I have one that's used for everything but I have a couple that are dedicated to turkey hunting.
Heck no! What's the fun in that? They all get used though. For a while I did use my Beretta 390 12g for everything but deer. It runs like a champ.
I have a shotgun fetish. I have a 20 & 12 dedicated turkey guns. I have 5 20 gauge o/u's for various upland game birds. A 20 ga. sxs for upland game and a 20 ga. benelli if it's nasty weather in the uplands or in the off chance I decide to shoot a duck. I have a 28 ga and 410 o/u for doves, skeet and 5 stand.
1 for turkey, 1 for deer. Don't hunt upland birds or waterfowl any more. My buddy uses same gun, swaps out the barrels and optics. Works well for him.
I have two early 90's Remingtons for turkey. 1 auto and 1 pump. I also have a .410 that I bought for turkey hunting and it has 1 kill. All with store bought ammo. All pattern really well too.
SBE dedicated for turkeys only. 20 ga. 870 for doves, 12ga. Stevens single shot back-up for turkeys, & 16 ga. pump for anything else. I deer hunt with crossbow, .308, or .30-'06, 30/30, or .50 cal muzzleloader.
Jim
One SPS 870 Turkey/Predator just for turkeys, an 1187 12 ga light contour barrel for birds, ducks and deer and one 1100 Special Field 20 ga just for pheasants and his majesty the Ruffed Grouse. I like short barrels.
My turkey weapons:
Started with an 870 wingmaster "hunt everything" gun...
Bought an NWTF 1300 for turkey ('89-'90?)...
Went to Benelli M2 "hunt everything" gun...
Just put together a youth 870 20 ga. to back to dedicated turkey for this year...
The circle of life continues... lol
4 dedicated turkey guns.
3 multi-use over unders
3 dedicated to waterfowl guns
3 dedicated predator guns
Two general purpose scatterguns and three dedicated turkey shotguns.
I have three "turkey only" rigs. And a whole variety of multiple purpose shotguns

Everyone has their thing. I prefere keeping it it simple and having money for other things. My .270 kills deer just as dead as a .300 or 7mm so no point in owning the others. Same with my turkey gun. Now if was into upland hunting or waterfowl I would probably have a dedicated gun for those pursuits. But work and being a father are my first priorities so I only deer and turkey hunt anymore.

For turkey I use a Mossberg 835. For grouse woodcock I use a stevens 555 28 gauge. Deer I use 308 win
2 dedicated to turkey
Like most of the others, I have one gun for turkey, a Winchester 1300 NWTF Edition. But thinking about getting a Winchester SX4 semi-auto for another turkey gun.
One for turkeys, one for deer, one for dove and one for bad guys.
1 dedicated 835 for turkeys
1 dedicated h&r slugster (scope) for deer
And a whole bunch others don't really use...dove..no more pheasants
One for spring turkey, one for fall turkey, slug gun for deer & hogs, one for small game, and one for geese and deer drives. If all I could afford was one, I would make due with that.
2 870s (12 & 20) for turkey
1 old 11-48 (12) for turkey(mostly fall)
1 870 (12) for waterfowl
1 old SXS(my grandpas) .410 for rabbits
1 Baikal MP-153 (12) backup or loaner for whatever
Boys have 2 20's. oldest has a youth 870 and the lefty shoots a Mossy bantam 510
TC Encore for turkey and deer. Other guns for upland game.
835 for turkey
Ultra Slug for deer
935 pro series for duck
Soon to have a BPS 10 for geese
12 O/U for pheasant
1100 for dove
.22 and a .410 for squirrel
48AL 20ga for rabbit
Mossy 500 12 ga I bring as a backup for everything.
.410- 10 ga pardners for fun
One gun for everything is boring!
Sent from my SM-G928V using Tapatalk
Mossberg 835 12ga ( everything)
Remington 1100 3"magnum 12ga (everything)
Charles Daly pump 20ga (everything)
Winchester 1400 semi auto 20ga (small game)
Remington 870 youth 20ga (turkey)
Bakial MP153 12ga semi auto (everything)
Stoeger 3020 20ga semi auto (new turkey gun)
I have different shot guns for different uses for sure. But my primary waterfowl gun is also my turkey hunting gun.
Beretta Urika-2 with a 28 inch barrel. It is Matt black but I used Rustolium paint for camouflage. It comes off easy enough with acetone, and I can change colors for waterfowl or turkey hunting very easily. It does make the gun look very "white trash" though.
Honestly, the paint seems to blend in better and has less shine and glare then do most dipping jobs.
I have thought about getting a separate barrel that is shorter with dedicated turkey sites on it. I am not all that interested in a scoped mount though.

Wow. I've used the same 870 for doves, ducks and turkeys for the past 10 years or longer. Been fortunate enough to kill a truck load of turkeys on public land here in MS and turkeys in 11 or 12 states. Also guided ducks hunts for many years. I just never realized I wasn't a "dedicated" turkey hunter, just thought I was too poor to get another gun when this one works just fine.

I agree 100% which is why I never said anything about "average". I was poking at him about being "dedicated" ;) Well really more about my funds (or lack of funds) to buy another shotgun. My ole 870 has served me well and is dedicated to pretty much everything I hunt that has feathers. :z-guntootsmiley: All Good!
As the old saying goes, "beware the man who has but one gun, for he likely knows how to use it"! Over the years I have wasted lots of money looking for my "dedicated " turkey gun. But I never found one that suited me as much as my old 870 with a 26" barrel in original bottomland that I bought when I was 14. It has killed turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, foxes, coons, rabbits, squirrels, ringnecks, grouse, groundhogs, woodcock, snipe, ducks and geese. It doesn't throw patterns as good as some of the guns I've had. Many of the guys here would probably laugh at the number it puts in a 10" circle. But I know the gun like the back of my hand and when I do my part, it does it's.

Disagree. The guy with one gun is probably your weekend warrior that might get out to hunt 10 or so times a year...for everything he hunts.
The type of guy that reads that you can kill a turkey at 66 yards on the shell box with those shells, throws the shell in his gun, and now thinks he has a real "tuckey killa".
If you see a guy with a sight on his turkey gun you may not know a lot about him, but he probably has at least shot the gun with a turkey load in it before he went hunting.
That said there are guys who have just one gun for everything and do know how to use it. IMO they are the exception though, not the norm
Really? I work with a fellow who owns 40+ guns. He hunts maybe 3 days a year. I guess many of us that use one gun are "weekend warriors", as in we have no other days to hunt. Does that mean that most of us don't know what we're doing or that we don't know what our guns will do? I know a lot of outstanding hunters who use their shotgun for everything. I also know guys who buy every new gun and load that comes out, thinking it will give them an edge. In my area the die hard hunters are usually the ones with the least guns. The braggers are the ones with the collections.
Classic Doubles 101 O/U 12 ga for duck/geese and sporting clays for a tune up.
Weatherby SA-459 20 ga for turkey
Remington 870 12 ga for saltwater duck hunting, for loaded snow goose fields, and for turkeys - my son has stolen it for turkeys, so it will be his gun soon. I have killed deer, turkey, hog, duck, goose, skirrel, and one possum that really deserved it.
One for turkey, one for deer. Will probably pick up a semi auto for birds soon

I own several scatter guns but only one is a "turkey gun." The others are for rabbits, tree rats, ducks, and burglars.
See I think the exact opposite. If a guy gets out of the truck with a new shiny fancy gun with gizmos on it I think this guy is a 2 weekend a year "hunter". But anyway.......
I have several shotguns,to many to admit to on a public forum and tend to use different ones for different things. My SX2 is for waterfowl and doves, I have a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter for deer , and my first generation 870 Super Magnum for turkeys, but nothing to fancy on it. Spray bomb camo job, turkey choke, and truglo sites on the vent rib.
My grandpa owned 2 guns. A 12 ga Model 12 and a Marlin .22. I once ask him why didnt he have more guns . He told me he could do everything he needed with what he had and couldnt shoot more than one at a time anyway.......like trying to ride 2 horses with one............well you know how that ends.

I like an 870 for turkey, but lately have used an 1187 20. Light weight, quick, and not much noise. Great gun.
My go-to turkey shotgun is my Remington 870 12 gauge with an Undertaker choke tube; however, what I really like to do is take different shotguns since Illinois allows for three permits during the spring season. So far, I've successfully used my grandfather's 12 gauge Winchester Model 12, 12 gauge 1889 Remington hammer double barrel, 11 gauge flintlock fowler, and 20 gauge flintlock Fusil. This season, I've got a Remington 870 20 gauge with an Undertaker choke tube as well as a 12 gauge LC Smith Damascus hammer double barrel for which I've loaded up some black powder shells. It should be fun!!

Yup. Show me a gun like that and I'll show you a hunter. Show me a new, latest and greatest one with all sorts of add on's, and I'll show you someone who likes spending money on guns. Nothing wrong with either one. But saying that a guy with one gun is a weekend warrior or isn't a serious hunter is about as bad as an assumption as a person could make.

cant do that brother I got a family to feed! :TooFunny:
I personally know all of those types of hunters.
My hunting partner with the old beat up 870 that's the best turkey hunter I know.
Then there's one of our friends who has the old 870 that is missing the rear sight on his gun (and it doesn't bother him enough to get another one) and didn't even pattern the last two types of shells he bought (one of the them was the dreaded Hornadys).
I am the guy that likes top end equipment but I know it like the back of my hand and have put it through its paces so I know its limitations and attributes.
And then there's my dad who doesn't really hunt much, but has all the shiny new equipment. In his defense though, he can afford whatever he wants and has me to do the legwork of patterning, trial and error of chokes, etc.
I use 3 different guns to turkey hunt with. I think it's fun, to mix it up.The main thing is, know what load to use.Well yeah- the 870 so from the eighties, is my go to, turkey gun.
I have two Berettas, a 12 ga and and a 20 ga. , that are setup specifically for turkey hunting with scopes and fully camo'd. My other shot gun is a 20 ga. O/U that I used for pheasant hunting but has been retired since my drahthaar has passed away.
I really like to have a turkey gun collection, but I don't.
If you don't have but one, that is your choice. For whatever reasons.
But to not really want more than one . There is something wrong, very wrong :help: :help:
Get to the gun shop, quickly before it to late for you! The cure is just around the corner :z-guntootsmiley:
Fun intended ;D
I have 3 setup for turkeys, two 12's & a 20
Only use my Benelli M2 12 gage. It's a machine. Got lots of notches in the stock!
I have my first turkey gun old Nova 24in is now a loaner if any buddy needs a gun for a hunt. Dedicated turkey
Sx3 NWTF 20ga dedicated turkey
870 youth 20 fully tricked dedicated turkey
Cynergy 12ga for clays
Vinchi an SBE 2 are duck/Dove guns
I want a pistol grip 12ga for turkeys I see that in my future when ever I decide to switch from a 20.
I have a 1187 that I use for everything but I am looking for a dedicated turkey gun.
Back when my wife and I first got married we didn't have much money, not many young couples do! But I had an old 870 wingmaster that I'd bought in high school with money I had earned mowing grass, and cutting firewood, but I used that shotgun for everything for many years, but it broke and I let a fellow at work talk me into getting rid of it, wish I had it back. I actually bought another just like it, but it's not the same. Now I have several turkey shotguns, and many more that would fill the void just as well. I would have to say that my favorite by far is a Win 50 featherweight 12ga. with a modified choke, and I just may take it this year!
