Title: Turkey Chest Packs?
Post by: BDeal on March 09, 2023, 11:53:14 AM
I'm looking to buy a chest pack for run and gunning. Are there any specific models that I should consider other than the Outdoor Vision model?

Thank You!

FHF Gear is USA made and pretty solid. They have a chest rig and some turkey specific accessories for it. I don't have the chest rig, but I have a bino harness that I love and a couple other accessory pieces that have all been great.

***fixed a fat-finger mistake!

FHF is what huntineveryday is referring too.  I think ALps and Knight and Hale have them also, have not used any of them personally.

Can configure your own. Not sure if you use binos or not.

I have the FHF and it works well. I do not have their turkey accessories for the bag since I already had add on storage solutions.

Really depends on what you carry into the woods imo. I like it because it can double as a shoulder carry bag.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230309/a663895b6d8d1171fbf687cda4614f22.jpg)

I think the Alaska guide creations small binocular pouches would make a pretty nice ultralight one, they also have a lot of options to add pouches and packs

I have a run n gun 100 and the hs strut chest pack, I like the idea of a chest pack and keep trying to make it work but I haven't found one I really like yet

The mystery ranch bear spray holsters come up on camofire regularly for $10. It attached directly to the molle system on the bottom of my FHF bino harness and holds a box call well. Very similar to the marsupial gear setup above.

It looks like most of them hold a box call and multiple pots. For those that have used the FHF and Outdoor Vision models, can you comment on how many pots and strikers they hold?

Pack Rabbit.  I bought one two years bag specifically for the same reason you are inquiring, running and gunning with easy access to everything.  It is water proof including the zippers and seams.

Granted, when I bought mine it was not as expensive.  They do run sales from time to time.

I have a thermarest z seat that weighs nothing and i strap it to my belt. Typically i only run this kind of setup when I'm scouting/checking areas and trying to cover ground during season. If i know where turkeys are i always wear my vest.

Got a ? for you guys that run this type set up. How hard is it to switch to shoot with left hand if you normally shoot right hand while sitting down? I've had to do this a few times during my years of turkey hunting.

The whole notion of the chest pack is to be lighter and more efficient and organized.  So was the turkey vest.  I have an old mossy oak vest that's 25 YO and it's like nothing compared to the vest we use today.  Give it time and the chest packs will be as complex and cumbersome as the most complete vest of today.

This has got me thinking I need one of these for when I'm hunting the mountains.
Looks like a slick setup when putting on the miles and need a way to carry a few essentials
and have better mobility up and down steep terrain than a vest.

It looks to be a good little set up but I'll stick to my Glenda Green murse or my vest. I don't need much but the chest pack doesn't have enough room for all my snacks!

Love the looks of the Marsupial, but there are other less expensive options available if you search around.
I bought an Allen for wade fishing, but when it came in I thought this will be great for scouting.

You're not wrong. I'm still hunting turkey with my deer backpack and a bino harness. I was trying on some vests at Cabales over the winter and they are all too bulky and restrictive for me. I felt like I was putting on a scuba BC. Just couldn't pull the trigger an anything.

I'm hoping to see more of these chest packs that are modular systems vs just getting ginormous. It would be great to "buy once, cry once" on a harness and be able to switch things out for deer, waterfowl, etc..

The Meateater webisite has both chest pack and bino harness systems with a bunch of modular attachments. Like everything there, it's just too pricey for what it is, but I like the idea....

You could hold up to 6 or more really. I don't carry a box call, but there's room for it in the main pouch or you can get one of their accessory pouches to add to it.

I just looked that one up you posted. Looks pretty good and priced right. I have used
Allen brand stuff and it has held up for the money. I am wondering if the strap design
on it might get uncomfortable though with some weight in pack as it loops across back of the neck
instead of across shoulders like the other ones?

The pack rabbit looks pretty massive compared to the competition. Maybe its just the pics but it looks almost like a full size backpack that is just turned around. I'm trying to decide between the Outdoor Vision, Marsupial Fishing Pack, and FHF Versions. Dos anyone have suggestions between the 3?

I'd lean toward outdoor vision, as it seems to be more geared to turkey with easier access and still secure. only negative seems to be the pot call holders may be snug from the reviews.

I have a similar setup with the marsupial fishing pack. I added a pocket for a box call on the bottom, houndstooth mouth call packet on the front and also used 1/8 inch shock paracord to attach a small hunt comfort seat. I used shock paracord loops and used nite cam jams to attach the seat to the vest. With the cam jams I can deploy and retract the seat. Seat detaches quickly if needed. Also if you want to add more storage you can clip in a hydration pack to the chest pack. I have an Alaska Guide Creation hydration pack from a previous harness that clips right into the marsupial fishing harness.

I come from using a vest so we will see how the chest pack works. Still not sure if this is a gross over complication. I can carry up to 6 pot calls and 6-8  strikers. If you ditch 2 pot calls in the main compartment you can squeeze in 2 more short boxes.

The box call holder is a water bottle holder from Amazon. I had to modify it and make it smaller because it was way too big for the box call and it rattled around. The FHF bear spray holster also works for box calls but is kind of a pain to get the box call in and out at times. I also have seen someone on here use the marsupial bear spray holster. I just looked and the marsupial bear spray holster I want is back in stock so I will be giving that a try also.
The Velcro loops were an Amazon purchase.

How did you attach the mouth call pocket?
Title: Re: Turkey Chest Packs?
Post by: ChubCreek on March 14, 2023, 04:47:31 PM
The mouth call pouch comes with a lanyard to wear around your neck so I shortened the cord and used a molle attachment clip to attach the pouch on the top. The pouch is magnetic closure and the fishing harness has a magnet on the bottom so the bottom is held down by the magnet on the harness. When you want to change calls you can swing the pouch up and see your mouth calls without taking it off the harness and then secures right back down with the magnet.

In my defense, my current fly vest is nearing 20 years old and I have not purchased a dedicated Turkey vest or pack yet.

Bino's would take the place of one of the pot calls in the main compartment or I would pocket them. I have not decided 100% yet. Carrying full size binoculars would present another issue.

I ran the Alaska Guide Creations bino rig last year a little when it warmed up.

I bought their largest model, the Denali, I think. Added 2 range finder pouches with it. They slide on the same harness, one to the left, one to the right of the bino carrier.

The bino carrier is large enough for my 10X42 Steiners, and a few strikers. It has a side stash that I have a Diaphragm call holder in. Has a zippered pocket in the back and mollies on the bottom. The range finder pouches fit a 3" pot call.

I did reorder and got a water bladder pack, don't remember the name of it but from same manufacturer. It had a better harness, more comfy... It also has a storage area, like a very small pack for a snack or two that you can mash against a tree while set up.

Overall, this is a very nicely built rig. It is a little pricey, can't remember but a few bills. Only down fall I haven't overcame yet is a seat. I will figure something out on this later, most likely after setting on a rock for an hour and not being able to walk for two days.

I'm using the bear spray holster from marsupial for my box. It's pretty snug. Which could be a good thing. Sometimes it slides right in and sometimes and sometimes it can be a pain if it hangs up going in. Since you're really putting it in blind.

I come from using a vest so we will see how the chest pack works. Still not sure if this is a gross over complication. I can carry up to 6 pot calls and 6-8  strikers. If you ditch 2 pot calls in the main compartment you can squeeze in 2 more short boxes.

That's a real clever, nice set-up. Well done!

Great setup Chubcreek, I really like it. Probably going with that next year.

I just saw a chest pack that looks awesome!! Allen Shocker. I don't know how to post a link or picture but I really like the look of it!!! Y'all check it out.

Have a good one, Bo

I just looked that one up you posted. Looks pretty good and priced right. I have used
Allen brand stuff and it has held up for the money. I am wondering if the strap design
on it might get uncomfortable though with some weight in pack as it loops across back of the neck
instead of across shoulders like the other ones?

If you look at the Marsupial site they have many options for straps and mounting attachments. With the Marsupial buckle delete kit (watch the YouTube vid on buckle delete kit- pure genius) and a strap kit you could change it to over the shoulder easily. That is my plan IF the neck strap irritates me. Once you figure out what you will need Amazon and eBay also has many options available.https://www.marsupialgear.com/collections/all

I have the marsupial harness and buckle delete and it makes the bino pack ride much higher on your chest.

Thats a nice looking rig! I'm leaning towards the Marsipual as it seems it would be easy to use for activities other than turkey hunting also but I like the looks of the FHF as well. Has anyone had experience with both of these??

Thanks guys. Put a decent amount of thought into the setup. Inevitably there are are probably some negatives to the system or things I won't like. I'll have to give a pros and cons update after I use it this spring.

Kifaru has their steelhead pack as well which looks like it would work as a turkey pack.  They also have a hydration pack that can be paired with it. Pricey but good quality.

It's a real nice pack, shoulder straps very comfortable. Not bulky, holds just what you need......

I just bought the HS Strut version.  Will not replace my vest, but can load it up on those frequent warm afternoon or long walk days. Should pair well with my Ol'Tom flyweight shirt.

FHF Gear is USA made and pretty solid. They have a chest rig and some turkey specific accessories for it. I don't have the chest rig, but I have a bino harness that I love and a couple other accessory pieces that have all been great.

***fixed a fat-finger mistake!
Dont know about the others, but the FHF easily converts to a sling carry style with a 1" waist belt option.

If anyone is looking for something smaller.  The Nomad chest harness isn't too big or bulky.  Holds a pair of 10x32s just fine with the essentials as well.  They make a few attachments for it also but I got it for the bare minimum runs.
