Best choke for #5 Win lead

I shot them in a carlsons ported choke, .665 with good results and a friend shot them in a xx full com n choke in his 870, shot real good.

Comp-n Choke. Either a XXX or XX, up to you. I shoot a XX in my 10 bore with both 2 oz. and 2 1/4 oz. loads. XXX may be a smidge tight with the 2 1/4 oz. loads.

Since you said you'd tried some 2oz loads I'll throw my experience out.  I was in the same boat as you a few years back and ended up with a kicks .655 shooting 3" 2oz 5's.  Nearly went broke figuring it out, but that 870 would shoot the best lead patterns I've seen to date.

I'm thinking from 660 to 670 might be in the range of what you need.

I have a 20", 21" and 28" bbl,,,  1 3/4oz 5's, 1 7/8 oz 5's and 2 oz 5's  .655 and .660 Kicks.  Been able to turn 80's consistently with 28" . 660 and 1 3/4 5's. Looking for 100..

Original poster here. My barrel is 25 inches long. At 40 yards it is clearly a great turkey gun- have killed a lot with it, even killed two consectutive birds at 50 and 51 yards measured- but missed two in a row at 50 and have decided to see what I can do to get a consistant good pattern beyond 40. I am trying to stretch out a few yard longer. In the past I also patterned 6's and like many pics I see here they look super- but I am very leary of 6's beyond 40 yards.

You just posted in another thread that you got 233 in a 9 inch circle at 40 yards with the 3" Longbeards #5 thru a Rem. 870 with 21" barrel/Kicks .655 combination?

Yup,  just shot that this morning. Shocked me. Think I'm gonna try all the Win Pb 3" 5 loads through this set up and see what happens. I'm surprised about these Win LB 5 patterns because the best I got with my other 870/ kicks .655 was 214 with the LB 3" 6's. Bizarre..

Shot 3, they all looked about the same. Great patterns but if you look at it..if you shot a few inches off there wouldn't be much shot in the turkey, not to mention what that pattern looks like inside 25 yds. Didn't have time to shoot close. If I could get a pattern around 110-115 with Pb 3" 5's that would be ideal for hunting. Hoping this setup likes the 5's (2oz, 1 3/4, 1 7/8)

1 3/4..I will have to keep shooting and see those results from box to box to rely on them. I've seen some strange patterns. These included.

Longshanks----Don't know what sights are on your gun, but from you pattern picture, your pattern looks high and to the left. You need to adjust your sights to the center of your pattern. Then your above statement would not matter as much, "if you shot a few inches off their wouldn't be much shot in the turkey".

That was with just the bead and having to aim at the bottom of the target..added adjustable sights today. 10" pattern at 40yds doesn't give allot of wiggle room especially if the turkey is closer.  I like a little more margin for error for hunting. I've had to shoot turkeys running in, walking, going in and out of strut, etc. majority of turkey's I shoot are inside 25. Would love to hit a 115-120 5 pattern at 40 with some good margin for error at 25.. but I am still shooting.

Im on the same page as you Longshanks.Im more concerned about having good even pattern out to 15"-20" out to 30 yds than I am about having my target look like a screen door at 40. I know everything is tight from about 15 yds in,but i'm more worried about missing a bird with too tight a pattern from 15-30 yds than i am about having to shoot one at 40.My guns pattern well to 40 I just dont get hung up on a super high number at that range.If its 100-110 + and evenly distributed at 40 i'm happy.Nothing wrong with doing it either way tho.
