I usually double the tax and add some till I get an even number. Who carries a calculator with them to figure out what 20% is?

TRKYHTR

That'd be handy if you have a high sales tax.   :D

lacountryboy

Bad service 10-15%
Medium to good service 20-25%
Really good service and personality 30%

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
If attacked by a mob of clowns, go for the juggler.

+1

CB   about 18% in NY

I served tables through college and for a short time after college.

A lot of college graduates can't find jobs right now and are out there running tables to pay their bills, including their student loans.

I tip between 25-30% for exceptional service and a delightful personality.

20% for good/great service without personality.

10% if the service was poor/non-existant

Most servers work for 2.75-4.00 per hour.  That's half or less than half of minimum wage and many work pretty hard to ensure a positive dining experience.

Not tipping..... man, no class....

15% on the net amount prior to sales tax being added. If I get better then usual service I will tip more.

Joe,
To take 20% all you need to do is find 10% and double it!
