Hey guys I have a Navy Arms Mule Ear Side-Hammer 50 Cal. Rifle and have not been able to find anyplace that can tell me what the proper nipple for it is. Right now I have a musket nipple on it but it is to big and when you pull the trigger many times the gun will not go off. I need to know what thread count, size or whatever you call it nipple it takes (No place that does muzzle loaders around me anymore) Here is a link to one like it I will post pictures shortly. https://www.gunauction.com/buy/5424831
Not a black powder shooter but google dixie gun works. It was a store in NW Tennessee that my buddies use to brag on.

I do have one of their very old catalogs, they had a wheel lock I wanted to build at one time. Thanks.
A Google search revealed that Navy Arms sold their business to VTI. Their email address was listed as mail@vtigunparts.com Being a fellow muzzleloader, I wish you the best in finding an appropriate nipple.
Hahaha. Clicked on thinking something else other than muzzleloaders.
Clickbait... The title of your thread is certainly one good way to get more exposure though.
Good luck in your nipple search....
LOL... All of life can be condensed into the company of good friends, laughter, and the search for nipples.

Thank you very much. Well let me ask you another question, I did not hunt for 17 years and my balls got oxidized, can they still be used or should I just get new ones? They look like they have snow on them. Thanks.
LOL.... Now the responses to that will be interesting. I can't stop laughing

The possibilities are endless.
Turkey hunters always had more 'characters' in their number than other pursuits. Keeps life interesting.
I have heard not hunting for 17 years can cause that. Never took the chance and risked it myself. If you decide to replace them I would go at least 58 cal.

No click bait, the part really is called a nipple. I would hate to see how you would reply if I had asked where to buy a new nipple pick.

I have always wanted to get an ol'Betsy like they used in the Revolutionary war, they are .69 Caliber smooth bore muskets, not very good at distance, they are better up close. Still like the historical significance in them.

I contacted them and they could not help, said Navy Arms was just an importer and they gave me info to contact another guy that is a gunsmith. He had no clue what it was but wants me to send him the nipple that is on it so he can look at it.
Most imported muzzle loaders had a metric thread for the nipple 6mm x .75. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a screw in this thread size and see if it fits. If it will then midway USA has some for the Lyman muzzle loader for # 11 percussion caps that should work for you. Rifles made in USA has 1/4" x 28 threads
As for the balls soak in vegetable cooking oil then roll them around in a towel

Thank you very much. If I can get the use of a vehicle I will be sure to do that. Thanks for the info on the balls as well.
Buttery nipple lol.

Never tried, will let you try that ointment out yourself.
Try a local machinist if you cant come up one. In sure it can be duplicated.

I think the route I am going to go is to send it to the gentleman I mentioned above. He said he has them in all sizes and should be able to help me out. I would try the other routes but I have limited use of a vehicle this week and have to get ready for my shoulder surgery on Friday. Still putting away all my turkey hunting supplies and have to go get the blind and calls off the property I hunt tomorrow.

I'm in the same boat. I have a lot of Turkey hunting gear to put away and organize. LOL! I tend to get sloppy toward the middle of the season when I start wearing down and am running out of energy. I like to conserve as much as possible so I'm not too tired to hunt.
Might want to pick up a spare if you can.

I used to have a lot more room but with my GF here I have had to get used to not having as much. I am trying to get some verticle shelving units to put stuff up in my bedroom to keep stuff. I am pretty anal about keeping my stuff in order and keeping stuff for each individual type of hunting in separate areas. Deer and turkey are all I do at this time unless you want to include woodchuck and I use my turkey clothes for that well they are also my deer clothes to be honest, except for my cold weather stuff.
By "Might want to pick up a spare if you can." I am guessing you mean the nipple and if so you know I will, I want 3 to 4 at least.
If the gun is European made and I think it is, I have some spare nipples for my Lyman Greta Plains that I don't shoot any more. A couple are the Hot Shot nipple, and with a no. 11 magnum cap they work great. PM me your address and I can drop one in the mail to try. Just will have to wait until next week to ship it as I am out of town.

Well than you. I will send that now. It is going to be neat getting my GF to pull the trigger on it, I am having surgery on my left shoulder and won't be able to lift it with that hand. I think I will have to get the guy downstairs to do it though. No load of course.
OK, got your PM. Good luck with the shoulder.

Thanks, I just have to not fall on it after surgery this time. lol
Ouch. Many years ago I had a partially torn knee ligament from a hockey injury. Was waiting for surgery with the knee in an immobilizer, out a bar one night and a scuffle broke out right next to me. After a loud pop and severe pain... had a 100% tear.

Oh man, I have a knee that likes to pop out of socket when I am sitting at the computer sometimes. I had to teach myself to pop it back in place using my belt once out hunting on my own. That was not fun.
Was just doing a quick search and found that model was US made and uses a 1/4-28 thread nipple according to here: https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/navy-arms-side-hammer-32-cal.72047 (https://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/navy-arms-side-hammer-32-cal.72047). Should be easy to find one. I now remember my grandfather had at least one in his gun shop when I was a kid, he was a gunsmith and did a lot of trading.

I thank you for the information but the one thing that concerns me about it is that they are talking about a .36 and .45 Cal. and mine is a .50 Cal. I wonder if that would change things? It also took #11 Caps by the way.
Looks like the .50 is Italian made:
QuoteMy Navy Arms mule ear rifle was also named the Country Boy and was also made in .50 caliber, but that was an Italian Pedersoli model only imported for a short time several years...
Here's the link, originally the thread is talking about an inline they made later with the same name: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/navy-arms-country-boy-50-cal-any-info.541898/[/img]
.
Will send one I have.

Thank you very much, look forward to shooting it this year again after a VERY long time.
Now do you know where to get a replacement ramrod for a Traditions Panther? They make a very interesting whistling noise as they fly to the target.
I have to get a lot of new stuff to be honest, no clue what happened to everything. I have to get another cap for the ramrod for the first gun as it is missing the side with jag attachment and just a whole new cleaning kit but a lot of that can be done through the summer.
