We'll I have been blessed with the opportunity to turkey hunt this year in Georgia. A logger invited me to ride alone and hunt. I'm half tempted to I just don't know with work and def doing Kentucky this year.
Also, the prospect of missing work is not faring too well with the boss. Leave on Friday March 23rd and get back the next Friday.
What is the hunting like first week those parts? Alma, GA specifically.

Man I'm really, really trying. tbh, the price is just too good not to go. I mean it's a much better deal than the Kentucky trip and its private land. It's just the time. Gone for a whole week right now could cost me late spring/summer log supply.
On the flip side, I didn't take a vacation at all last year. In fact, I filled in at other locations while they took theirs! I could even get someone to fill in for me, at least unloading.
Then it sounds to me like you're due a vacation and about time for someone to pick up the slack for you! The opening week in Ga is my favorite time.
You gotta do it! The opening week here in Georgia is awesome, I don't think you will regret it :z-guntootsmiley:

Posts like this make me even more excited than I already am. Hunting 1200 acres of private ground in Bartow County opening week
It should be good. Gobblers started fighting about a two weeks ago and split up. Been seeing single gobblers strutting and gobblers with hens so they should be ripe opening week.
If you can swing it you should go, I love S. Ga. for the first weeked. I will be a little North of Alma in Mt. Vernon Ga. Hope you get to go and good luck!!!

Everyone knows that there are no turkeys in Montgomery County.
Are you going to Benton Lee's that night?

Thanks. Now I know if I can't go it's really going to suck (knowing this) being at work instead all week!

Bartow is close.
You guys sound like every native when it comes to asking if there are a lot of turkeys around!
Btw- in Ohio you can only bag 2. In GA you can bag 3. ;)

If you Don't go tell him to call me! I'll meet him there! Just kidding. I'm off the first week of the GA season so iif you can swing it you should definitely come visit us! I love the opening week of GA season.
It's about 60/40 now favored to going. I talked to a few of my loggers and I think I can swing it IF I can get someone to unload for the week. it will just be a last minute decision thats the only thing I know 100%. :gobble:
The main spot I hunt I just outside of Alma! Too funny I found this post.
There are TONS of birds down here that are active this year. The nearby public areas are looking quite promising as well.
Who are you going to be coming down with? It's quite possible that I know them.
send me a pm and I'll say!
just would prefer not to mention names aloud
You need to go, should be a great hunt. Good luck to you. :icon_thumright:

Is marijuana growing still as big down in Bacon Co. as it was? I ask just from the standpoint of being out roaming in the woods and accidentally discovering some.
There are no turkeys in GA.

:TooFunny: Yep the Bacon County boys are known for growing their smoke to be sure. I can't remember how many big crops I've seen seized over the years down that way. Back in 1996 or 1997 Peter Jennings went down there and did a huge report called "Pot of Gold" that aired on one of the major networks. It was wild. The farmers were admitting to growing it on camera in their corn rows and told the interviewers that they were in cohoots with the sheriff. Shortly thereafter there was a raid and a lot of big named people got taken down by the state and feds.
There's really nothing around there except for farming or the power plant in Baxley so the vast majority of the people that get nailed for growing are dirt poor. The ones that are behind it have all the money usually and they generally skate away unharmed if it all goes down.
People have to survive and for a lot of those folks it's one of the only ways that they can sometimes. I'm not saying that I condone it, but I honestly don't think I would do anything other than go back where I came from if I happened up on someone's crop.
I saw that show back then and tried to find it yesterday without knowing the name. I found a transcript for it on the NORML website with google.
Someday we all got to hang up our boots. One thing i know for a fact, when that day comes, won't a one of us be saying we wish we'd spent more time at work... :p Go, enjoy yourself and hope you stuff a big one!
Are you kidding!!!!!!! If you have an op to go out of state and hunt private land and it's free and you are not dead or dying you better take advantage of the invite. You are crazy if you don't go!!! It may never come back your way again and some people that extend serious invites take offense when you say you can't make it.
Go, have fun, and try to fill all your tags as fast as possible because you may never get another op like this again.
FYI you can kill more than one bird a day in fact I think you can kill all three the same day. Check the regs but I'm 99.99% sure there is no one bird a day limit like many other states.
Hunting Georgia for turkeys anytime of the season is great! Opening week should be hammertime! I hope you get to come on down to the peach state and join us a while. Good Luck :you_rock:
Thanks gentlemen for the encouragement. I am about 70% sure I'm going as of right now. As long as I can get my loose ends tied at work by next Friday I should be able to go!
Yeah I noticed you can kill 3 down that way. I take that as a sign there are just too many turkeys and not enough hunters. I figure I can help with that.
Can anyone give me an idea how that land down in there lays? I'm just wondering what to expect. I'm from se Ohio so I'm not too worried about steep terrain...just curious.

Now that is funny.
Im in the coastal plain. Not really familiar where you are gonna be at. One thing is for sure. You can pretty much count on being able to find planted pines where ever you go. There are some hills above the fall lines, but most everything else is flat.

I suggest you pack your thermacell and your deet. The skeeters aren't too super active yet, but if it warms up another few degrees, they will be. I've seen 'em bad enough that they could prolly tote off a small dog.
It depends on what part of Bacon County you're going to be hunting as to what type of terrain. There's mostly planted pines and fields. Some areas are hardwoods and there's also some creek bottoms and swampy areas scattered around the county. As Savduck mentioned, it's a lot of flatwoods around that way.

Thank god!! It will be a relief to hunt some flat country for once. Sounds a lot like Ohio minus the hills. I can deal with pine forests. Sounds like a plan. Josh, as well as others, the advice has been overwhelming. Thank you.

Which license do I need to get? I went on the Georgia site to see how much it was going to be. Now I'm just confused!

Are you planning on coming back within a year? If not, then you can get a three day permit for much cheaper. I think you have to buy the combination hunt/fish as well as the big game. I'm fairly sure that for residents we are required to have the regular hunting license in addition to the big game when hunting turkey. I would think that this would apply to non-residents as well. It seems like the hunt/fish is a requirement for the big game license. I don't know really, because I have to buy both anyhow every year to be able to hunt both small and big game. If you get both and only will be making the one trip down this year you can get a three day permit for $90 for the big game and then $20 for the combo hunt/fish. $110 total for three days of hunting. For the annual you are looking at $295 total for the year for non-resident which covers both permits. You may want to call and check if you are required to have both as you might be able to save a little dough if only one is necessary. 1-800-366-2661 is the number on the site.
Two more words of advice, permanone and snake boots. We have not had a winter of any measure and the deer and seed ticks are terrible. The warm weather we've had the last three weeks also has the snakes coming out of their slumber.
You will need the non-resident hunting license and the non-resident big game license. You should be able to buy this in a 3 day pass.
Have fun and enjoy our beautiful and ecologically diverse state.
But we're going to be hunting Saturday 24th to Friday? I'll ask them what they usually buy.

They really hit the non-residents on the fees. It sucks.
There used to be a 7 day license. Turkey are considered big game. A resident has to have his hunting and big game hunting to kill turkeys.
Assume Non resident would to.

Yeah that is pretty high. But if there are lots of birds then it's probably worth it.
The guys I'm going with wouldn't spend this kind of money if the hunting wasn't awesome. In fact, I believe he said "you'll wonder why you ever wasted time in Kentucky, and will want to come with us every year."

One more thing I forgot to mention, bring sudaphed, allegra, claritin and/or benadryl. Allergy season is early and it's hitting full swing. Being from the north it may affect you much harder and I'd hate for you to loose a day because of it. If you wear contacts be sure to bring an extra set and some solution too.

I don't think they're lying. The game here isn't super huge when compared to a lot of other parts of the country, but we definitely have the numbers going in our favor.
Thanks for the heads up Josh and Shellwaster. I just know when we get down there and I hear that first turkey gobble it will be pure bliss.

I can think of a few activities that might come a close second.... if I could only figure out how to combine them with turkey hunting I'd be in business! :happy0064:
Taking it that I have hunted a few other states. I am from Georgia and hunt a ton almost every morning. The birds are here but I swear Georgia and Florida have some of the hardest birds to kill.
