I'd say photo finish between the 500 and the 1300 but for up front affordability through the discount box stores, etc. the advantage goes to the 500.

you bring up a pretty interesting point about the 1300, i wonder why the 1300 is not carried in more retailers? If there ore profit margin in the mossbergs?

I really like my 28" SXP, but in a few years I want to use it only for wingshooting after I get a turkey-specific gun that's a bit handier (maybe a 20 gauge, jump on the TSS train...would become a handy youth gun for my son when he comes of hunting age...but there's still some water to flow under the bridge till then).

That "junk" sure has killed a lot of turkeys through the years. You don`t have to hunt too hard to find somebody who`ll tell you that the 835 Ulti Mag is the best patterning turkey gun ever. I`d probably be shooting one myself if my buddy hadn`t put me on my 870 Super Mag a few seasons back.

I'd say Mossberg 500 also, but I'll throw another one out there for honorable mention, the Remington 1100 or 11-87.  Probably a regional thing, but it seems to me that where I live our turkey numbers were going up in the 60's at about the same time that the 1100s were new and gaining popularity.  I'm 50 and guys about 10 years older than myself seemed to really like 870's or an 1100 and many moved on to an 11-87.

My 11-87's and my X2 all out shot my 835. Same choke and shell combos.  Have had my 835 for no less than 28-29 years, never liked it. But because it was the first 3.5" gun I just had to have it.   It has been in the home defense role for the past 25 years.

You got a bad one then. Sorry to hear it let you down. I would say 90+% of the people would say different. They are great guns

Since 1950 over 12,000,000 (that's twelve million) 870's have been sold. Second I would say Mossberg 500 and third I would say Mossberg 835, by sheer volume of sales of these guns. The vast majority of turkey hunters don't make enough to buy large collections of turkey calls or foreign Italian auto-loaders. The vast majority of turkey hunters buy what works and buy the best they can afford. And I might add the men toting these guns in the turkey woods probably shoot the majority of the turkeys taken, just my opinion, we all got one.

The ironic thing is that most guys would trade a Benelli for an 1187 Greenleaf camo. That's how values have changed in our turkey gun arena. If we all would have known.......
