I know the sound you are talking about and misfire game calls make a good soft easy playing slate. He is on here I believe

A shorter plexiglass/acrylic striker will also mellow out just about any slate call.

That is definitely true. I just got one new the week before last, and it's not my preference after trying it, but it does mellow out the calls and a lot of people love them.

I think as far as a new call, I would go with a Sneed slate for what you want. Very versatile at the low end, even though it is very good mid-volume.
