Any advice on how to purr on a trumpet? I know there are better calls for it, but it's fun to learn new stuff.

Call Dangerfield or Joe at Mother load. I've been trying as well and I'm about ready to go on suicide watch. If you figure it out please tell us how.

I saw video of Slaton purring on one and it was very impressive but then didn't quite sound like a turkey purring to me, not something I'd actually use in the woods. I'd like to get good at gobbling just for fun, but all I need in the woods is yelps and clucks.

Air control, minimal volume, tongue movement. It takes a lot of practice.. and time to get proficient.

Putting your finger in the bell of the call will not get the desired result.  Good luck.

I have been building trumpets over 20 years and of all the people that have played my calls I have had less than 5 that could purr good on one so to say that its hard is an understatement.

I've been trying but didn't know not to use the finger. Gonna try without tonight.

That is the fartherest thing from my mind! Simply because there are so many other calls that will do it better. I've never heard anyone do a contented purr on one!
I'm not a Christian because I'm strong and have it all together. I'm a Christian because I'm weak and admit I need a Saviour!

IMHO, Anyone who uses their finger in the bell end of the call hasn't mastered air control. That is one of the most important aspects of calling with a Trumpet. It takes time. Too many people think that a trumpet is akin to all other types of calls -pick one up and call in a turkey.

Trumpets and wingbones require the most skill. It's why so many people give up on learning to use one well.

You don't use your finger at all for back pressure?
