I've got a purple heart over red cedar short box from Mike over at spring creek that I really like. I've got a black Walnut with maple sides on order with him, I'm sure it will be full of turkey.

I've shot a bunch of birds using walnut and maple, but I'm quickly becoming a fan of purpleheart or walnut over eastern red cedar.

Got one with a butternut box and one with a persimmon box, fantastic boxes!! Also have  a Hudson hen box, snakewood/teak, another awesome call!! All of them are beautiful boxes and spit feathers!!!

I don't think I've had my hands on enough boxes to have a very valuable opinion but for what it's worth of the 8 or 9 boxes I've owned. I have a SS paduak/mineral poplar that's a sweet talker and persimmon/black limba from frank kruer that's all feathers.

Frank and Al Shoemaker make great boxes in what I consider the hunter class price range (under $100).

a friend of mine built my absolute favorite box call for me the calls made from walnut butternut sassafras and cherry all the wood was cut in wilson county tn by c.dies of 3 track turkey calls
