DIY camo dip
December 20, 2014, 08:34:50 AM
Have any of you guys ever tried the DIY camo kits? I just ordered a pistol grip stock for my 835 and while looking for places to have it dipped I ran across the DIY kits. I think it would be neat to do it myself, but not sure of the quality and duriablity of it. Anyone have experience with it?

There are a number of threads of DIY dips. They look really good too....

Thanks guys. My plan is to just dip stock if I can find a pattern that is pretty similar to MOBU.

Yes...I've done it and it looks as good as a bought job. I studied prep and technique for almost 6 months before I did it. It's more difficult than it looks but very cool when you do it yourself.

Gophert, what camo pattern is that? Where did you get it? That looks great.

I used the mydipkit camo pattern: Trek Camo
The key is the prep and knowing when to dip. I really didn't use to many of the kit supplies other than the film, activator and clear coat. I used SEM etching primer to prime directly to the gun after a complete de-grease. I then used Krylon Fusion Camo tan. (it was not as bright as the light tan that came with the kit)
I practiced on CD-r cheap compact discs until I got it perfect, then I did the gun. I had minimal touch up and it looks like it was done at the factory. I hunted hard with it last season and it doesn't have a nick or scratch.

If I remember correctly that kit is around a hundred dollars. You could pay someone to do it for that if you're just dipping the stock.

It's $69 for 1 meter of film. I seen a video on YouTube where a guy shows how much one meter actually is. It's about 20" wide and 6ft long. That should be plenty for me to practice and do the stock.
