This maybe a dumb question, but can a person buy just the dampener, and install it in the stock himself?

You can purchase a replacement stock with the system installed.

I've already purchased a new pistol grip stock for my 835, and with my skills, I could easily install this in the stock I bought,.........If I could get it.  May have to give Mossberg a call today.

Yes, mine has the LPA trigger. I really like that trigger. It's smooth, no creep and no over travel. I set it at the lowest setting and it's more like a good rifle trigger.

There are a number of options, including finish,  that you can choose and each influences the barrel length available.

I'd be happy to help but it's probably easier if you start here  http://www.mossberg.com/products/shotguns and go through the available options and choose the options, including finish, that you like.
