Seems like the better patterns are coming from the shorter 21"-23" barrels. Anyone have some good success with the 3" LB's 5's or 6's and the longer barrel? More open choke?

I use a Jellyhead .665 in my 870 with 28" barrel and get amazing patterns with the 3 1/2" #5's as well as my cousins who tried the 3" #5's in the remington turkey choke (hevi shot rated).  They also shot just as good in my gun through a Truglo gobble stopper .665 and old undertaker .675.  I will say that my cousin did try a remington choke that had straight rifling and the patterns were still good, but nowhere near the others.

Thanks, I haven't shot the 28" yet. Just curious, gonna try the LB 3" 5's out of a kicks .660. I have a Hastings .665 I could try also.

I shot my 870 with 26" barrel .660 with 3" LB #5s the other day.
I didn't shoot at 40 yds and count hits because the 870 is my third choice of turkey guns in my arsenal, but I am taking a new hunter with me this year and will let him shoot it.
I just wanted to see the pattern at some real world turkey hunting distances, so I shot once at 18 yds and once at 32 yds. Bead sight aiming at the orange dot on the wattles. I think this would give a decent pattern at 40 yds for #5s. I will set the DSD up at 25 yds and hopefully get my buddy his first bird.

Wow...that's serious. Don't think I would worry with numbers either.. What choke is that?

I have no idea what choke it is. I've had it for over 20 years. Maybe someone can look at my picture and tell.

Longshanks, I shot with a guy that was testing these shells out last Friday. He had older 870 with a 30" barrel and a Kick's .665. Shot the 3" LB 5's and the pattern was real good. We didn't count any numbers but my Browning does around 200 in 10 at 40 and that combo was every bit as impressive.

No worries with that pattern.

One of my personal current interests is nest predators and how a majority of hunters, where legal bait to the extent of chumming coons.  However once they get the predators concentrated they don't control them.

The more I think about it, I might just use the 870 with the LB 5s on opening day Saturday. I have hunted exclusively with my Encore for the last 7 seasons, but it might be fun to get nostalgic with Ol Faithful. It is truly amazing the patterns that the LBs are producing. I just hope people remember that it's still just lead shot. 20-40 yds should be a stone cold dead bird, though.

I'm hoping the kicks .660 will do ok in my 28" bbl. Have a non ported Hastings .665 that may work as well. Strange thing is I measured my barrel from the reciever and it was just over 27. I guess it is considered a 28". Thanks for the info.

Looks like Hastings Ported..the writing on it is identical to my Hastings non ported .665. Not sure.

I was thinking it was a Hastings, too.

Looks like Hastings Ported..the writing on the choke, knotches at the top and the color are identical to my Hastings non ported .665. Could be Carlson also. Someone on here will know what it is I bet.

Nice looking setup there!

I don't know about barrel length but Rob Roberts says that better patterns come from longer barrels.  Just FYI
