Hi Trumpet turners. Does a turning square blank have to be 1 1/2" X 11/2" width. Can they be slightly smaller like 1 3/8"X 1 3/8' OR 1  7/16"X 1 7/16"? I know the length is usually 6" plus. I have a couple of nice turning square blanks that are slightly smaller then 1 1/2"

Best to ask the builder you want to send it to. Some it will be fine while others it may not.

Davisd9, Thank you for the reply. I`m  just want to know if some of these fine trumpet makers have turned some of these slightly smaller width turning square blanks.

I have used 1 3/8" x 1 3/8" x 6"+ plenty of times, just need to have a solid blank as there is little room for error.

Thanks Greg. I really appreciate your input. Totally makes sense about a good solid block!

I have had a handful explode on the lathe, some woods just don't like steel edges.

I have used as small as 1 1/4" square by 6" long.  That's about as small as I can work with.

I actually prefer the smaller size. With a 1.5x1.5 blank, there is a lot of waste
