Quote from: Tarheel on March 14, 2026, 09:16:50 PMSeveral years ago, the landowner of the property I turkey hunt cut down a cherry tree that had amassive burl, and he gave the burl to me to make turkey calls. I had approximately 20 trumpet yelper blanks stabilized, and I've made 7-8 trumpet yelpers from the stabilized blanks. Cherry burl is one of my favorite woods to make trumpet yelpers.
Quote from: FULLCHOKE1100 on Today at 02:15:22 PMMy late granddad was born and raised in Kentucky. On his old homestead he had a cherry that he and his dad cut down in the 50s. The tree was planted on the homestead in the late 1800's by his granddad. He and his dad milled and saved the wood and made a decent bit of stuff out of it. He passed away in 2016 and I was given what remained of his wood stash. I had these made recently, boxes for both my brother and I, and a trumpet for myself. The wood is beautiful and both calls are players.I've only had the calls for a few years, and I refuse to get first blood on them anywhere else besides Kentucky. I'm determined to make the cherry calls first blood on the same river drainage where he grew up farming. The first picture is the exact location where the cherry tree was when he cut it. I had to do a lot of digging online and sifting through old deeds, surveys, photos, and property records, but I'm 100% certain it's where their old farmhouse used to be. I knocked on the door of the house across the street, and told my reason for being there, and the current landowner was generous and offered me to hunt the old farmstead, but there's just no birds there. The past two trips I've had really great hunts nearby, but I just can't seal the deal. Life's been busy and I've only been able to go for a two, two and a half days at a time and just when I have them figured out, it's time to head back home. Maybe it will happen this year.
