LOL.

As if anyone with a smartphone can't access the harvest numbers, success rates, average # days hunted and overall hunter satisfaction for each public area within said state.

Been my contention for years.  The biggest spot burners are the state's themselves.

I don't know if it works on pics hosted on another site then posted on a forum but; if location services are not disabled on your phone or a GPS equipped camera the exact GPS coordinates are embedded in the EXIF data of the picture. FWIW

I did that
Nothing like seeing a kids eyes light up upon hearing that first gobble.

Should would suck to be a local there, and have to hunt behind that sign next year.

So is it the general consensus of this board that it's not a legitimate hunt if the bird is killed on private land?

joey46

No.  I doubt if half of the successful kill reports even mention if private or public. Given the choice most will go private every time.

Add - just a IMO but that sign in the picture hasn't been there long   No rust on the t-post and no bullet holes in the sign.  Another locational clue.  Almost as good as a pirate's treasure map with X marks the spot.  lol.

The info being out there was not a drop in the bucket compared to what social media pimping did at a rapid pace.

Doesn't matter as long as they have their entertainment!  Those that can do and those that can't watch....

A faster pace yes. The best information available no.  A state's web site normally has all the correct information anyone would need for all it's public land.

BTW - that quote is usually "those that can do - do, those that can't do - teach".  Lots of "teaching moments" in some social media along with the spot burning.  In the old days one would buy casette tapes or videos to learn calling or techniques.  Now you just YouTube it.

How true! Back in the 1970's our Game and Fish Department put an article in their monthly magazine about spring gobbler hunting and named one very specific canyon as a hotspot. That canyon, which we had hunted up to that time, has never been the same since. To this day, there are more turkey-hunter camps in that canyon than anywhere else in the entire mountain range.

I get it. G&F thought they were being helpful to folks who might want to try spring gobbler hunting...which was a relatively new game at that time. They had no clue as to what the repercussions of that article would be...even fifty-plus years later.

Of course, the problem has been exacerbated ten-fold over the years with other media sources, but state game agencies, despite their good intentions, definitely don't help matters.  ::)
