My son bought this app. It is real handy if you want access to private land. You can view any state in many views, Topo, satellite etc. you can zoom in and it tells you how many acres are owned and contact information for the land owner. I'm on his plan for free. I think he said it was about $100 a year. One nice feature is you can download area maps to your phone or gps and view without service.
OnX had deal going on around Christmas time so I got the single state for about $20.00. It is very helpful app and truly worth what I paid.
Took a guy west elk hunting last year, he used OX. I'm old school just with a GPS and the birds eye view. I was shocked at how much better OX was. We were back in several miles and at dark he informed me of a trail that would end up taking us to a forest service road. It saved us from blundering back through the timber. And the ability to use his phone where there is no cell service was a neat option. I will have the one state option before next fall.
I spend the $100 every year and don't hesitate.
Promo code THP, for the Hunting Public show will get you some $ off.

I downloaded the free app just so I could check boundary lines but after the free trial is up that goes away. I definitely won't pay for it. Just to check property lines. There is a point to me where technology ruins things and I will lump this right there with trail cameras. To each there own but one of the reasons I enjoy the woods is to get away from that crap. If I can't beat a critter on my own then maybe I don't deserve it.
It's a great app, has helped tremendously with property boundaries.

I think its great for searching for public land, the offgrid feature is really nice also but I could see if you a property you are familiar with it wouldn't be of any use.
It's pretty good for finding public land and staying in your boundaries. Plus knowing the landowners name ahead of time helps seal the deal for knocking on doors. The best feature is that you can save the maps and use them when you have no service. I moved out here to SD 2 years ago and didn't have a clue of where I was all the time or what roads I was on.
I got the one state option . Property boundaries are a big help. Not only public but also private. Lots of fences on private which are not for property boundaries but for cattle and field edges.
Getting permission around here is tough enough and you don't want miss out on timbered creek bottom that the farmer actually owns. Or getting on the neighbor which may end your hunting real quick.
The wind and weather feature is nice too.
I have not gotten a smart phone because I had no use for it where I live as there is poor reception and add to that my house has aluminum siding so that dampens reception as well and I live on the second floor. Now that I am getting a vehicle on the Rd. in April I am thinking I am going to look into getting a smart phone, does not have to be high end but I would like to check out this app and a couple others I have heard good things about from other hunters here and on Facebroke. I would only do the single state option though.
Worth every penny especially when hunting areas your not completely familiar with.
The Onx Topo map is not as friendly as the US topo.
Get the camofire app. They have the OnX elite membership for $60 and the single state for $18 pretty regularly.
I get 3 states but it's limited in 2 of em. I get full access in 1. It is a good app

Was planing on getting ONX at end of month. But hate putting any more app's as possable on phone. Just because I don't understand all the technical stuff, and about information they collect on you. So anyway, first you have to download the camofire app, and then dose it give you sale deals?
For me the big advantage is being able to research ownership of land for locating potential spots to hunt by learning the owners names. I located a piece of BLM property that is landlocked by private ground. I was able to identify the three property owners that surround the land which will give a second option if they will not allow hunting they may allow me to cross. It is just a tool that helps if you so not have established places to hunt.

I just checked and camofire.com has the same deals that the camofire app has. That will keep you from having to get the camofire app. Get on the camofire website every day and see what the new deals are. They have different stuff every day. I'd be surprised if the OnX deal wasn't back on there within a week. When it is, just buy it off the website. They will send you an OnX card that's basically like a gift card with instructions on how to use it and download it to whatever device you want.
Another plus to buying it off of camofire at that price is that when your year is up, you can renew it at that same price you previously paid for it. That's what I've been told, but my year isn't up yet so I can't confirm.
I've been using it for 2 seasons and really like it. If you hunt public land or if you're just marking spots on private land it's a very useful too.
I use it and love it. 90% of my hunting is done on public land, and it can be a huge help to find starting points, be able to know property boundaries, and find more public land. I have a bunch of maps saved, and can turn the phone to airplane mode, not worry about other phone distractions, and battery will last all day easily. I have tried other mapping stuff, but nothing was as good as OnX for me. I love it.

Thanks for the information, I did look at the app but didn't, sign up. I will get ONX through the web site.

Thanks Silvestris, OnX is on it right now for today till gone. Just got my one year Elete memership for $63.52
Gaia GPS is just as good, if not better, than OnX at a fraction of the price. You can get a year subscription through their website right now for $36. OnX has been miles above the rest in marketing thus Gaia is not as well known at this point, but as word gets out, I suspect several will make the switch!
Here is an article (a bit old) comparing the two:

From someone who has hunted public land in Virginia, West Virginia, Montana and Colorado, I believe that OnX is worth every penny.
Thanks strutstopper, didn't know about the camofire site. I'm gonna renew my sub.
Anyone have a promo code?
Glad to help!
I love ONX for what i do. Between elk out west, public around home for deer and some out of state turkey hunts im not sure I would be as comfortable heading out without it. Its super nice to download a new map and head in knowing full well you wont be trespassing in an area you have never stepped foot on. I can also use a desktop to do research on and drop pins that will show up on my phone. There is a lot of good features IMO. I got the camofire deal this year as well and $60 for a full year is WELL worth it.
Very good app. I use it on both public and private to show property boundaries. It has also saved me a couple mile walk. I knew where I was and I knew where the road was, but just walking out of the super thick head in the right spot saved me some miles on my feet. Mostly I use it for knowing where it goes from public to private or from one landowner to the other. Two of the private places I hunt either have no fence, or it is not on the boundary. It is not like I pull it out and plan a hunt, but if I have put some walking in and am unsure of the boundary, a quick check lets me know where I am standing.
It is also really handy for figuring out how to walk in to oxbows when the river is high to hunt wood ducks. Don't need it for our regular spots, but when hunting a new spot, it helps a lot.
Good app, really like it.
I purchased the OnX app this fall and it's been a great tool to have.

I renewed my one-state subscription in December for $19. Just e-mailed them about adding two states and they said for $30 they would upgrade me to Elite (all 50 states). When it renews in a year it will be at $60/yr for Elite.

Love the app so far, can't wait to try it in season.
