Uhhh.....if a 3.5" 12 gauge isn't enough gun then I will just surrender. Now just walking around in the woods scouting, or bowhunting in Md. I typically have something in the .45 caliber range handy.
I ALWAYS carry. It's a habit that I'm not going to forgo simply because I have a shotgun in my hands. I am a home health care nurse and can work in some pretty unsavory parts of town and while my CW-9 may not be on my hip (scrubs wouldn't hold it up anyway), it is ALWAYS in my work bag. I don't care where I go as long as I'm legal if you don't know I'm carrying you'll never know and if you DO know it's because you're un the business end and not having a good day.
I always carry bang stick
Have to ask... "extra protection" from what?? I've had to wrestle a bird or two in my day during the flop, and sometimes they got in a good lick or two - but I've never felt the need to bust a cap in 'em. ;D
Never carried in turkey season cause I never saw the need for it, but I do carry a S&W 642 most of the time in bow season.
You probably need to check state laws, as far as I know, in my home state of GA, you have to have a carry permit to have a weapon that is illegal for hunting game.
I usually carry something while I'm out scouting or messing around in the woods or bow hunting we can carry a hand gun. I have heard stories of bow hunters getting robbed don't know if they are true but you never know. You could also have the neighbors pit bulls get loose and want to try to get you. We can also shoot coyotes year round here. You just never know what kind of people or animals you may encounter.
The need for a carry permit in PA depends on how you go about carrying. If not concealed you would not need as long as u loaded prior to entering a vehicle and depending on caliber may be illegal to dispatch any game. Rural PA has been know to have a meth lab or two and a Lot of ground I hunt includes secluded places and an unsuspecting hunter could unintentionally inturupt a transaction.
*unloaded
If I'm not in a state building where it's against the law, I'm carrying. Not because I expect to need it, but because if I always have it on me I'll never be caught unprepared.
I have used a pistol one time when in the turkey woods...on a copperhead that was between me and where I wanted to get. My turkey loads cost more than one pistol round.

Some places i hunt its illegal to carry a pistol unless a cc permit holder. But i stick a small pistol in my pocket because some of these back woods plaves are grounds to meth/drug operations and just old residemts that believe they own the land ad dont want outsiders in. So i carry regardless of the law to keep myself safe. Never know what im going to run into in the woods or what may be hanging around my vehicle when i return.
Not if I'm packing a shotgun, I had much rather use it than a pistol. If I'm shed hunting and bowhunting, I usually keep a little Ruger in my pocket.
I carry on some land I hunt in case I run across some hogs. The hand gun holds more and it is faster to get off. Also I do not see any reason to waste turkey shells on a hog or coyote

Always. Was out hiking and came across some very angry wild dogs.
I carry everyday. It's force of habit now just like putting your wallet in your pocket
I always carry, got my 9mm with me ever time I head out. You never know what could happen
And it's not EXTRA protection, just protection, when you carry every day.
S&W shield 40 anytime I leave the house just because I love freedom.

Like many. Pretty much anywhere I go I've got my Glock 26 with me.
Hogs, dogs, or any other reason you may need it.
Not always it depends on the situation. I do have my CC permit and most of the time I'm packing. I already carry way too much stuff while pursuing the wild turkey. As soon as I get my homemade snake shot for 38 special worked out I'll probably carry more when hunting. I did carry a model 29 while hunting Rios in Texas but that was for hogs.
It's best to know the law in the state you are hunting. In NM, it is illegal to carry a firearm in the field if you are hunting in a bow-only season. For turkey hunting, only shotguns (firing shot) and bows are allowed. To my knowledge, the regs do not say specifically that you cannot carry a pistol while turkey hunting, but based on past interpretations in this state, I think a person would get cited for having a pistol in their possession while in the field turkey hunting. Know the rules where you are hunting!

Been there.............done that.
Probably 20 years ago, on an Easter morning, me and Momma were out scouting a remote area at gobble time. We were about to get the run-around from two pretty large wild dogs. We both carry and drew down as I tried to yell at the dogs and tell them it was a bad idea. They didn't listen. Two rounds from my constant companion (G29) changed both their attitudes RIGHT NOW. Had we not been carrying, we were gonna have to go tooth, fang and claw with two big dogs.
Carry it ALWAYS and you'll never WISH you had it.
I got fixed a few years ago so I don't worry about it anymore.
During deer season it makes sense to have a pistola to dispatch a wounded critter without having to use the rifle again.
It also makes sense to have with snakeshot in case of an encounter with Mr. Moccasin or Mr. Rattletail.
There have been times in the spring I wished I had one to deal with an armadillo, raccoon, possum, etc.
I usually carry my glock 23 when scouting. I had a weird showdown this January with 2 big dogs that would nor back down. Only after firing a shot to the side of the more dominant one did they move off. I have faced off a lot of black bears without being spooked. That dog coming at me growling and baring his teeth non stop had me kind of nervous.
In reading the title, before reading the post ("Carrying extra protection"), I was going to say, that I always carried protection in my single days, but now that I am married there is no need... I was perplexed (and admittedly a tad concerned) as to the topic as concerned with turkey hunting....
As to carrying protection in the field... The shotgun will have to do... Any critters that I would be defending myself against, will be close before I shoot. And the same goes for people. If someone has a rifle and decides to (for some unknown reason) start a gunfight with me, I doubt a pistol would be much help.
I often do carry a sidearm while fishing though... Bear/mountain lion as well as "meth" country, I want to be armed with more than a fly rod....
While hunting, no. I figure no need then. But the rest of the time I always have my Sig 40 cal.
I have been involved in more than one instance on public land that weren't hunters, drunks and crack heads that had been out all night, I would much rather have twelve in a chamber plus the three in my shotgun than just the three!

More is always better! 1911!
I've generally just relied on my shotgun but thinking differently now. We've got an infestation of hogs. If I get the chance, I think I can do more damage with 13 rounds of .45 than my shotgun. Last time I shot one with turkey load at 10 yards, he just looked at me and ran off

Me too. everywhere, everyday.
I will sometimes have a big handgun with me if the situation calls for it, but never turkey hunting. Working cows and stuff on the farm I often have the Glock 20 or Ruger Blackhawk 45 on my hip.
Regardless of circumstance, I have that Shield 40 in my front pocket or in a Crossbreed IWB holster.
I don't but I have a couple of friends that do. One because he does all the time, the other because of all the hogs on his land!
Sometimes carry the .45. Bullets are cheaper and sometimes nice to have that extra protection.
