Title: Do you cover your eyes completely with a facemask?
Post by: WVhuntEER on February 06, 2014, 04:19:58 PM
My dad and I were discussing this the other day.  We both have blue eyes and he swears I should cover my eyes completely.  I do once it gets hot with a bug net but I usually wear a 1/2 mask and pull my hat down low.  He thinks gobblers can spot light colored eyes and I should do this all the time.   Just curious in what you guys do.   :boon:

No.If they are close enough to see your eye color pellets should be flyin!I wouldnt worry about it,just try to keep the glare of your face from showing.

I got blue eyes and I wear a 1/2 mask and keep my cap low just as you said.  Just be sure to keep your mask above your ears and you'll be fine.  being able to utilize my side vision is very important to me when I am hunting.

People put too much stock into the myth, lore, and legend of turkey intelligence and vision.

They are creatures of innate behavior and have concern for getting killed, but they are not geniuses.  They have very small brains and generally are not as smart as people, except Obama voters.

They are wary of movement and have to be to survive predation because they taste good.  They have two large eyes that provide good peripheral vision.  But they have eyes on the side of their head, they have to move their head to get a look at an object with both eyes, and do not have the binocular vision that humans have.  They are believed to have poor depth perception, and even thought they see in color (unlike most mammals besides humans and primates), their ability distinguish color is believed to be less than our own (due to smaller eyes and brains).  Don't expect that turkeys see things the exact same way that humans do, because they don't.  But camouflage companies make money trying to convince you that turkeys and deer do see things like you and I.

Use camo, break up your figure/profile by sitting against a tree, maybe even use a blind, but most importantly, BE STILL.

Otherwise, don't worry about the picayune until the turkey is right up in your face, then you might want to control rapid blinking of your baby blues to prevent him from wanting to mate with you.  ;D ;D

Please forgive me as I am a deer hunter.  This I learned deer hunting and I believe it works well turkey hunting too. I don't put a mask over my eyes, BUT!  When an animal is looking my direction, I squint my eyes partly closed and only look through my eyelashes.  I believe animals recognize other animals eyes.  Why?  When a car next you at a stoplight has a mean 'ol dog and he's looking at you, he stares right in your eyes.  All pets make eye contact with us.  I have been squinting at deer for several years and it works.

Thats the way I see it and I have blue eyes as well. I don't even cover my nose cause my glasses for up. Had a hen standing about 3 or 4 feet once looking me over but she just walked off scratching and eating.

I wear a 3/4 mask and a Boonie style hat. I've had turkeys get within 10 paces and not see my face. Another thing that I think helps is to put your decoys( if you use them) to your right or left at a 45 degree angle to your position. This way the birds aren't even look at you and if they do realise your there it's too late.

I've got a mask that keeps my eyes uncovered. Then I've got a thin mesh shield that drops down from the hood on my leafy mesh camo jacket that can over the entire head and face. Use them both. Works fine, as my sight isn't hindered at all.

My grandfather told me when I was starting to chase turkeys something similar to what was stated above. Said they aren't very smart but wild as hell. Spend their whole lives trying not to die. Has seemed to sum it up from my experience.

I have blue eyes and have gotten to where I usually wear face paint.

NO....I can't have anything in my way blocking the show!  That's what we do it for the SHOW!!!  I can't even stand having anything over my ears or touching them while turkey hunting.  For some reason I think its muffling my hearing even though I know its not.  Thank God I have excellent hearing...just wish I didn't have to put these contacts in every morning.  But it could be worse so I'm blessed!

God Bless

Pull your bill down low and put the nose part as high as you can and you won't have to worry about it. The most important thing to worry about is your movement. Be still and that will cover a lot.

Exactly..... They never see my blue eyes.... They are usually flopping around way before they have a chance...

I don't cover my eyes with my facemask but I have been known to squint my eyes so a turkey wouldn't see the whites of my eyes.

Yes, I have a complete camo screen built into my hat, but I have a hole cut out for my aiming eye.
Had trouble seeing through the screen in the wee hours when they come in quick off of roost.

I rarely wear gloves or a mask. If it's cold I wear fleece just for the warmth. If he can see my eyes I should have done blowed his head off

I'm a bow hunter and I do the same thing 2Eagles does and have for years when deer or turkeys are extremely close to me....I don't always shoot turkeys when they are close enough to see me...seems like sometimes they are of the female variety.

I wear the same spandex camo facemask , lightweight, with an approximate 3" tall by 5" wide eye opening, that I use when deer hunting, when I turkey hunt.  For deer I just layer them, ie wear two for colder weather with a camo stocking cap over.  In turkey season I either wear a camo baseball cap over the mask or just the mask.

Being completely motionless is still the key.

I wear a 3/4 mask and pull it up as far as I can comfortably take it.  I will never cover my eyes.  I  am sure with my hat brim down near my gun there is a darkening effect.

I don't think a bird will pick up your blue eyes but think he will pic up a swaying gun sling which Imo spooks more birds than anything.

I have blue eyes as well and don't cover them.  I do however keep my cap down low and I always look for a place to set up that is in the shadows or facing away from the sun.  Keeping movement to an absolute minimum is the key to not spooking birds.

I've had a bird pitch on my gun barrel. I've had a squirrel run between my legs while sitting down for a turkey and I've had a hard gobbling strutter come by me at about 6 feet before I took his head near bout clean off with some #6's.

Out of respect for my dad I might do things the way he wanted me to while hunting with him, but as long as yall back up in the shadows of some good cover and sit still, instead of hearing "PUTT PUTT", you'll be having turkey dinner back at the house!

Good Luck!!

I don't cover my eyes either.  Like others have said, I also pull my the bill of my cap down low and sit motionless.  I've had birds get really close to the point where I've squinted to avoid them seeing the white of my eyes and I've actually closed my eyes on a couple different occasions when they've got really close to me.  Did a hunt with a buddy where I was doing the calling and he was positioned out in front of me.  The bird ended up going around us and then worked his way back towards us.  He ended up coming really close to me so I closed my eyes and I could hear his footsteps as he walked by me.  About a minute or two later my buddy put the smackdown on a nice, at least 3 year old bird.

Thanks guys!  I appreciate all the responses.  I have always left my eyes uncovered but dad and I were having this debate a few days ago and he always has told me I should use a full net or something.   He is a great turkey hunter and learned to hunt turkeys from a guy that insisted that they could pick up on light colored eyes.    Anyway, this convinces me I can keep doing it my way.  LOL    :funnyturkey:

Ok, here you are:  camo tinted lenses in sunglasses.

It is another opportunity for people to obsess in ignorance and for consumer product companies to prey upon the ignorance and separate them from their money.

I also have blue eyes and haven't given it much thought. In fact, I don't always wear a face mask. Definitely wear it more often turkey hunting than deer. almost never wear it deer hunting.

On sunny days I wear sunglasses quite a bit. Not to trick the turkey, just because I like sunglasses on sunny days. :toothy9:

In all seriousness, If a turkey is close enough to see the whites of my eyes, it's like a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs....wont be long now. :z-guntootsmiley:

i have always worn a 3/4 facemask and have transition lenses in my glasses and on bright, sunny days they almost get too dark. so no chance of turkeys seeing my blue and sometimes bloodshot eyes  ;D
but, last fall i busted a flock of toms walkin in, set up, waited and called. 15 minutes later heard one walking toward me from behind. he stepped out to my right and stopped 5 yards away.
i shoot righthanded but with the brush i had no shot anyway. but when i turned my eyes only to look for a shooting lane where i thought the tom would walk out into the field, he took off like the space shuttle. the only thing that could have spooked him was my eye movement.  :(

I dont usually but if the mosquitos are really bad and I dont have my thermacell, I might pull my 3/4 mask up over my eyes to protect my nose and forehead.  I prefer not to though since it restricts my vision.
