Interesting stuff.  Although I think the initial described study has limited value based on the parameters described, it is definitely good to see that at least one wildlife agency is taking some action in determining the reasons for what appear to be regional declines in wild turkey numbers.  One encouraging note from the initial study is that, at first glance, it looks like the known poultry diseases found in turkey populations are not likely to decimate those populations.  From my perspective, that is good news.  However, there is still lots to be learned in sorting out the reasons for the declines in turkey numbers.  Hopefully, more states will take the same initiative that TN apparently has!
