Ready to purchase a barrel for 870 wingmaster 23 inch for 2 3/4 inch shell.  My apex 9 shot tss is on the way.  I have a choice of extra .687 or super .665 choke tube.   Couple questions...1) lead only choke tube.  I'm seeing ok to shoot tss, but hoping to hear it again by the experts.  2)also seeing things like tss doesn't always perform the best on tight chokes, so would .687 or .665.  be a better a better choice?

I wouldn't recommend shooting TSS through a lead only choke. As far as constriction that unfortunately is trial and error.

Definitely the .687 on the Remington with tss. Don't pay any attention to the lead only, hevi-shot, and whatever ever else is wrote on the choke. That's so idiots won't shoot BBB steel shot through their turkey chokes. 8,9,10's tss will be fine through the tight choke they just don't seem to pattern as even as a more open choke.

BandedSpur

Agreed. The .687 should throw a nice hunting pattern but will probably not put up huge 10" numbers. Also spot on concerning "lead only". I would not shoot BBB steel through one, but small TSS is fine.

This is a choice only YOU can make.  In an 870, the .665 choke is probably the tightest and best choke for this gun but you will have very tight patterns at close ranges (baseball at 20, softball size at 30 and volleyball at 40) but better overall numbers at 40 and beyond.  The .687 will open your pattern at closer ranges and fall off a lot quicker after 40.  Most turkeys are taken at 20 to 30 yards so you have to ask yourself, Do I have confidence in myself to hold tight at close range (.665) or have a more forgiving pattern (.687) at close range and give up numbers at 40 and beyond.  Your Choice?

Shooting the Carlsons chrome lined 23" barrel out of my 870. I'm back and forth with deciding on the SF .665 and XF .687 with Federal TSS 3" 9's. Biggest dilemma is I don't want to shoot $50 worth of shells to shoot 25 yds and 40 yds to find out exactly what it does. Opted for the SF .665 with the Federal shells since they like the tighter choke.

I don't shoot an 870 but the Xfull tube (.690) in my Model 12 holds a great hunting pattern with 2-3/4" TSS 9's or 8.5's. I didn't count holes but I wouldn't want to be a turkey between 20 and 40 yards and probably a bit beyond.

Lots of great advice (and optimism).  Thanks!  Looking forward to doing some patterning!

Suggest getting a good idea of the pattern first with some regular field loads. TSS is beaucoup expensive!

665 most the time if you want hot core.  Now how dead is dead?  you can open up the choke a get a hunter friendly pattern
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.

Definitely, get the .665 constriction.

Bought a Carlsons 24" chrome lined barrel for REM 870 and have both SF .665 and XF .687. Have a bunch of Hevi 13 3/2/6's and 3/2/7's. Thinking TSS through the XF .687 and Hevi 13 through the SF .665.

My father in law shoots the extra full in his 870 with #5 or #6 lead. 3".. turkey killing machine.

I've got a buddy that shoots 3 1/2 inch Hevi 6's out of a .665 IC with good results.  I would say give those Hevi 6's and especially those 7's a chance.  3 1/2 Hevi 7's is all I shoot in my 835 and they are devasting.
