Jelly Head Choke tubes

This a simple question to answer for those that are more informed.  I've searched to no avail.  Concerning Jelly Head chokes, I've seen discussion on how the earlier version is more desirable.  Can anyone explain the differences from the original version and the new version?  Much appreciated.  Thanks.

The original version had a better team of engineers involved. Like everything else, they had to make money so they made the "new improved" model that just doesn't seem to pattern as well in most cases. It's like the truglo ssx vs gsx. Small change, big difference.

I remember hearing something a while back about the parallel section being different between the old and new.

Can't recall right off. Something about was stripper or something. Maybe the lack there of. It's been a while but whatever it was, total flop on their end. But, people bought them and sold their old ones thinking they'd get similar performance. Personally, I'm not getting rid of mine any time soon. It rocks. Having said that, it does reside in the barrel of a gun I've not hunted with. Ever! Just patterned it. If I ever get enough land to warrant the need of a lightweight rig, it'll see some action.

Here is the answer that Clark gave.... a person that has vast knowledge about chokes and guns.

"The major difference is in the "internal geometry" of the choke tube. It is still a conical/parallel design but hey lengthened both the taper and the parallel sections. The ports are a bit longer and thinner and they eliminated the knurling at the muzzle. They coated it with a very tough material to prevent rust. All in all it's a more finely made choke than the original

I suspect that the "Black T" coating requires more break-in time than the original blued choke and that may account for folks not having the results they expected.

When I am in Missouri hunting at my friends he has a client every year that hunts with him, he shoots the newer jelly head but not the tss version. One with the green band on it,  It shoots ridiculous patterns with apex 9s.

He usually gets to camp while I am already there and test fires his gun once he gets settled, so I have seen it shot multiple times.  Oh and he kills his 2 birds typically as well!

i was wondering the same thing. I have a new one and was curious if its worth looking into getting a older one

I'm running a .690 Jellyhead Max in my 835 with Apex 2.5 oz Small-town blends. It's throwing an excellent, even pattern. I'm afraid the Jellyhead TSS choke would be too tight with a .670 diameter. I like to run slightly more open chokes than most folks do with TSS.

According to Primo's web site they only have 1 Jelly Head choke. It is the new Maximun that was referred to in the other thread I posted the link to. The TSS choke they show is completely different looking than the Jelly Head. They also have another choke(Tight-Wad) that is for the budget minded. I had one of them for the 20ga. and it put out a pretty decent pattern. When I bought it, I read that it actually patterned just as good as or better than the Jelly Head 20ga chokes. I never tried the Tight-Wad in 12ga.
I haven't shot the Jelly Head Max or the TSS, so I can't compare them to the old original Jelly Head.

I have a Jelly head that is no less than 20 years old, Don't hunt my 12ga's anymore. Might just have to shoot it and see how it does.
