I recall a turkey hunter or two encountering a rattler in Alabama before daylight when they were trying to set up on a filed.  I believe someone here posted the story and video of that experience.

I have a friend who climbed up to his deer blind, the floor was about 10' above the ground.  Standing on a ladder, he opened the door he had a big eastern diamondback staring him in the eye.
He said he hit the ground running top speed.

We've got a lot of rattlers in the mountains of north Georgia, especially up high near boulder fields, rocky knobs, and rock ledges/cliffs, etc. They like rocks and sun shine here. Here is one my 12 yr old daughter and I encountered while bear hunting back in the fall - we also see them in turkey season but I dont have any of those pics on this phone:

That was a pretty big timber rattler.  Did you measure him?

In S. GA the timbers and eastern diamondbacks have some overlap.  And then there are water moccasins and copperheads too.

Anybody know how much a couple of skins would cost? I have a old Ben Pearson Cougar recurve that I would love to put some skins on.

Yes, he was an inch shy of 5 ft. and tasted delicious. Those rattlers in south GA are generally bigger than what we have on average. This one was pretty big for the mountains. We encountered several this past season. I dont necessarily enjoy seeing them!

Not sure. Ill keep you in mind the next big one i come across this spring or summer, and try to get you a good skin. They're easy to cure.

Thank you very much. I was given the bow years ago and though it shoots fine it the front is pretty scared up.

Never had one get in a blind, but my cousin had a copperhead slip in on him while bowhunting for turkeys, it's a pretty comical to hear him tell it since the snake also came in where the exit out of the blind is located. My cousin just flipped the blind over and then couldn't see where the snake went.

I have saw and killed several timber/canebrakes during turkey season. The live one got a free pass, the dead one was killed on opening morning of turkey season a couple of years back almost at the lodge we were staying in. Funny thing was that when we came back to the lodge at lunch, another snake had crawled across the road at almost the same spot.

For those that don't live in snake country, it's easy to see where a snake has crossed a dirt berm or road, and the wider the trail of the snake, the more chance that it is venomous.
