Thanks for all of the great feedback, I'm going to start by ordering a SS and see if I can get the hang of it.

Thanks!

Have one of theirs, quite nice. Yellowheart & Mineral Poplar

Ernie Fetters, or Bob Fulcher of Shadetree Callers.  Ernie's call is full of feathers, awesome tone. The one from Shadetree, it has the same range of turkey sounds as a long box, it will kee-kee through course jake yelps.

Stunning little calls that fits in your shirt pocket. Went through a scratch box addition several years back, but its these two that see vest or shirt pocket time.

Both guys are top notch, classy gentlemen. I'm honored to have these sweet little scratch boxes.
A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409

Russell Beard makes an all cedar call "trash mouth hen,"

I agree with all mentioned.I will add Lonnie Gilbert to the mix also.
I have several scratch boxes, including some from those mentioned, and my favorite are from Lonnie Gilbert.

I broke one that he perfectly repaired (in which I just paid for shipping), and he also sent me some wide strikers to try out (which I now prefer over the standard strikers).

I called him, told him what I was interested in, and he made a call which served my needs perfectly.  I love the sounds (especially on the low end) that a scratch box can make, and this season, I finally called in a bird from start to finish with one of his calls (I often finish a bird with a diaphragm call due to the lack of motion).

There are a bunch of good call-makers, but as my first experience was with Lonnie Gilbert, and having had such a good experience, my bias is with Lonnie Gilbert.

Good luck!
Did I do that?

Mike Lapp, Scott Basehore, Lee Bowles, Bob Fulcher, Lonnie Gilbert, Wray Sticther and the other mentioned in this thread all make good ones

I agree with all of the call maker's who's names were mentioned in this post as they all make great scratch boxes.  Like Silverspur had mentioned I would also throw into that hat Wray Stitcher who's name may be unfamiliar to a lot of folks but man does he make some sweet sounding and beautiful scratch boxes.

I have a couple from AL Shoemaker SS calls in Virginia. They're Awesome!

My favorite scratchers are from Kentuckyheadhunter here on the forum and SS calls.

I have purchased a few now, and my favorites remain to be the ones from Lonnie Gilbert...

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the names mentioned, and I have calls from a couple of them, but both my favorites are from Lonnie...
