16 ga tss shot selection
« on: April 04, 2019, 09:05:37 AM »
I’m looking for some opinions on tss shot size for 16ga. I really enjoy the round and have a few different guns in it. I’m thinking about getting one to build up as a turkey only gun and was wondering what’s the preferred shot size that some of you other guys seem to get best results with. My goal would be a 40 yard turkey killer not necessarily a super choked thread a needle with every pellet type of gun. For the most part I would be buying shells such as apex because I haven’t ventured into the loading my own side of things yet but might in the future. Thanks in advance for any input.

I'm going to shoot some #9 tss handloads out of my 16ga soon.  I know the #9 will do the job at 40.  I use the same size in my 20ga.

I like the 16 gauge too. Its a shame you can't find anything on the shelves with more than 1 1/8 oz. loads.

I assumed 9’s would be the top pick since they worked efficiently in 20 and 12 ga setups. I just thought there might be technical reasons to avoid certain sizes. Kind of like the idea that a 3” 16ga would be not near as perfect as the 2 3/4” is due to shot column size and all those really specific things that are  over my head.

You mention a 16 gauge 3" shell. Have you ever heard of that being a reality?

No.

Here’s my Auto 5 Sweet 16 though!  Kicked butt with Apex until I started rolling my own!

He said would be not is. I’ve also heard the comparison. Basically the reason there is not a 3” in 16 gauge, because it would not perform as well as the 2 3/4
If you make everything easy how do you know when your good at anything?

Pre WWII there were some 16 gauge guns (LC Smith for example) chambered for 3" and Winchester, Remington, Peters and few others loaded shells for them.  Very rare guns and shells.

Sumtoy, Trulock, Briley, and a few others. Personally I would go with Sumtoy. William’s Sumtoy’s now choke all of my turkey guns.

William is great and makes a HELLUVA choke. It’s a tank. My Auto 5 Mag 20 is my main rig this year and it’s amazing with patterns.

 #9s are 356/oz so that's 1/2oz more (178 more pellets)
