Hen decoys, Your choice and why?

Every year, new guys want input on decoys.  Normally they ask which hen should they get?  But no one ever gives them a reason why they should get this one or that.  Most just give advice on what has worked for them in the past.  So I'll start with my opinion.  If I'm only going to use one decoy, it will be a feeding hen.  I've had really good luck using a single feeding hen or two.  In nature when I see hens without gobblers, it is normally in a relaxed setting with hens feeding.  If I'm calling a gobbler or two into my setup, I want them coming in calmly and not alerted.  This technique has killed plenty of birds for me.

In 2001 when I started hunting I bought a " Feather Flex Flock" of decoys. It was a jake, a feeding hen and an upright hen. I still use them today. They look good and are light. I have bought other decoys, Dakota Jake and Killer B and Dirty B( bargain cave at Cabelas), but I use the feeder hen and jake the most by far. It works and I am a creature of habit so they go with me most of the time. When I take my 12 year old  daughter we use the blind. So I usually take my Dakota Jake and the 2 hens. I like the Cherokee Sports call girl blow up dekes with foam in them because they were on close out way back when and they pack easy in my vest.  I don't use them much but they make a good back cushion against the tree inside the game pocket when stowed.  They do work well at times

I believe it is a preference to what the individual has experienced in the field. Mine is a feeding hen, they can be harder to see in certain grass but give the impression of contentment where an upright is in an alert position.

Fill the body up with corn and drive it right out to the flock. Course some some corn spills out because the ground is uneven but hey this is hard core hunting and ya gotta push through the difficult times. That spilled corn actually helps out cause old major warty head (that's the name of my hit list tom this year) will get on the trail and as soon as he sticks his noggin in i can hit the guillotine trigger and next thing you know I am posing for my tweeter and twitter, fakebook and hey look at me pics.

Darn, well I guess back to the drawing board for me. Someday I will tell the story of Bobbitt the 2nd. I was a little slow on the trigger and just caught his snood in the trap. All the hens laughed at him after that and he wound up committing suicide.

Cause I don't have to dress up to look like a turkey.
