Running box call with no screw attached...interesting

Spent some time last night tuning a long box I just built. I noticed that when I ran it without attaching the lid with the screw (securing the paddle with my left hand and holding the box at the same time) I was actually getting a great sound. Much different than it sounds with screw holding down the lid. I was able to manipulate the amount of pressure in a certain way that's not possible with a screw. Call seemed to be louder/crisper and i was able to get a more thorough and longer drawn out yelp. Cuts sounded a lot better as well. If I could get those sounds while actually having the screw attached I'd be pretty satisfied with my call making. I guess that's just part of it though! If anyone knows what I'm talking about please feel free to chime in!

That's very interesting, I would if by holding the lid on if the pressure was more uniform across the lid?

A quality paddle caller will most run itself.  It just needs someone to carry it around the woods. Yoder409
Over time...they come to learn how little air a good yelper actually requires. ChesterCopperpot

I believe it was Winky Hicks that used to make a box call without the lid attached.
