I thought I would share this with yall. Opening weekend one of the guys I hunt with ended up with a banded dove. I asked the young boy hunting with us to get their bird's out so I could take a pic. When he did I asked if they saw any bands. No one knew to even look. The first bird the boy picked up he said, this one has a band! Pretty cool stuff. Look at the bird on the left and you can see the band before we took it off.

Holy smokes that's cool!!!! We've always joked about shooting a banded dove, not thinking it was even a thing. Congrats to you guys on a nice little pile of doves, and the band of course!

Saw those for the first time on a youth hunt just outside of Easton Maryland. Young man shot two doves with bands. Didn't know the boy and his father so I never heard about the particulars.
Now you got me wanting some bacon wrapped dove breast!

My friend reported the band. The bird was banded in Aug and died sept 1. He traveled about about 15 miles to the northeast.

Congrats!
A few years ago, during a pretty good dove shoot, I knocked one down my Labrador didn't mark well.  I sent her on a blind, and she brings the dove back.  I was pretty happy.
Upon her delivering the bird to hand, I notice it was banded!  There was lots of hooting and hollering.
I then proceeded to check the rest of the doves I had killed, and lo and behold I had killed another banded dove that morning that I hadn't noticed!  Crazy.
Both were banded within 15 to 20 miles of where I killed them, less than a month earlier.

I killed a banded dove in 1980 in Colorado that had been banded a few weeks before around 15 miles away.  I put the band on my duck call lanyard with other duck & goose bands.

Luck counts, good or bad.

That is cool, did not even realize they banded doves. Congrats

We use to band them on National Wildlife Refuge I work on in Louisiana.
60% of the time it works every time!

Sweet!!! :icon_thumright:
I've never been lucky enough to kill a banded anything. :(

Very cool! I had no idea they banded doves. I killed a banded Ringneck duck several years in South Mississippi that was 12.5 years old and banded in Alida, MN. Don't you know that bird saw some things and dodged some predators in his lifetime?
