so it seemed all the rage several years ago was shooting the indian creek choke with heavy shot 567 load.  I bought the choke, which is marked .665a and several boxes of the mentioned shell.  Seems to pattern decent but not like the posts described, tends to really open up beyond 35 yds (not that i would take a shot much beyond that).  also, shoting out of an 870, 23 inch ported barrel.  looking for options in the load department.  put clamp on rifle sights on rib to center pattern, also thinking about going with some sort of optic.  so many pros and cons regarding shooting some type of scope or dot.

Since your gun has a relatively short ported barrel I would recommend a non-ported choke to optimize its performance. I would recommend the Wright's .660
https://allaboutshooting.com/products/wrights-invectorwin-choke-12-gauge-turkey-choke-45 for your gun and those shotshells. That choke is just a great performer with a variety of shells. It does well with lead or any of the tungsten-based shot shells. I believe that you will see very even patterns with your gun and that choke.

So you think I'm doing myself a disservice with both a ported barrel and a ported choke? Does this affect both pattern and velocity?

I believe that you would gain by trying a non-ported, .660 turkey choke in your gun. The Magnum Blend shells were made in an attempt "cover the bases" with different sizes of shot and they do a good job of that. I'm sure that you get a complete burn of the powder in your 23" barrel but the muzzle velocity would be somewhat less than if it were shot from a 30" test barrel, like the one used by ammo manufacturers to determine the muzzle velocity that is quoted on the box.
I would try a .660 choke and see what happens. I think you'd be pleased with the results.

Thanks for your advice and explanations, I'll give it a try

dont put alot into the Mag Blend.  It kills good but will drive you crazy when you put it on paper.   I tell guys to shoot other stuff at paper and keep them to shoot birds. LOL   It will run over a bird but on paper you will not want to hunt with it.
Tell us just how dead do you want them to be and we will see if we can get that for you.
