Has anyone tried drying Hackberry for pot calls?

CMBOSTC

I have a bunch of it in the shop. From what I remember,  it hasn't checked as bad as other woods.

AT

The reason I was asking, I know where some good sized ones are fixing to get pushed over and put in a fire. Thought about getting couple logs cut leave them laying for a few months then having them sawed.

CMBOSTC

Go for it, make sure to seal the ends though.

AT

Not that I'll be making any calls with it but might have someone make me a call out of it some day.

JonD.

Don't leave them outside for very long. Hackberry rots fast if exposed to moisture.
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:30-31

I always liked the Hackberry pots from Lonnie Mabry better than any others he made.

Soundsl like you should contact Lonnie Mabry and see if he will pay for shipping,,then get a few calls out of the deal.

Depending on how far you cut it down, air flow and humidity it could take a while to air dry. I cut mine down to pot call blank size, seal the ends and keep air blowing on it for a couple of weeks or more. You really need a moisture reader if you don't already have one.

I have a mabry slate that is one of the best out of the few pots I've ran of his if that says anything.

I might cut some up tonight for making some pots. What is the recommended surface/sound board combos?

AT

I'd be interested in a slate/wood

CMBOSTC

I have maple sound boards.

Hey Chris, the mabry I have is grey slate. You might try some green in it too.

I'll bet that will sound really good.
