4th season in iowa
April 23, 2011, 10:48:56 AM
HELLO FELLOW TURKEY HUNTERS....THIS IS MY FIRST POST! I LIVE AND HUNT IN SO. ILL. BUT ALSO GO ELSEWHERE WHEN I CAN. I HAVE HUNTED IOWA NOW 5 SEASONS. NON RES HUNTERS ARE ALLOTED 4TH SEASON TAGS. I HUNT THERE 4 DAYS IN EARLY MAY. TENT BLIND WITH A BOW TIL THE LAST DAY THEN SHOTGUN IF NECESSARY. THE BIRDS USUALLY SEEM TO MOSTLY IGNORE CALLING. I HAVE USED ABOUT EVERY TYPE OF CALL AND STYLE OF CALLING. CAN ANYONE ENLIGHTEN ME IF YOU CAN AS WHAT WORKS WELL ON THESE IOWA BIRDS. WHERE I HUNT THERE ARE LOTS OF BIRDS POSSIBLY MAKING CALLING DIFFICULT AS GOBBLERS HAVE PLENTY OF ACTION. YOUR COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS WILL BE APPRECIATED

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

I LIVE IN KINKAID TOWNSHIP ON HIGHWAY 3 JUST NORTH OF A SMALL TOWN CALLED JACOB. I HUNT ON MY OWN 90 ACRES WHICH IS BORDERED ON 2 SIDES BY THE SHAWNEE NAT FOREST. MY HOME IS ABOUT 3 MILES SOUTH OF KINKAID LAKE. TURKEYS WERE ORIGINALLY STOCKED IN SO ILL ON BUTTERMILK HILL WHICH IS 3 MILES FROM ME. I HAVE THEM SOLVED ABOUT AS MUCH AS ANYONE HERE BUT ALTHOUGH I AM FAIRLY SUCCESSFUL IN IOWA I NEED TO BE ABLE TO WORK THEM IN WITH CALLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THE BOW. THERE ARE LOTS OF BIRDS SO AMBUSHING THEM ON TRAVEL ROUTES WORKS WELL ENOUGH WITH A SHOTGUN.THE BIRDS MOSTLY SEEM TO IGNORE CALLS THANKS

I have hunted Iowas late season for years. If you can,get out often throughout the season and usually you'll find a day when everything clicks. I've had the best luck early in the season, but have also gotten them late also. If hen talk doesn't seem to be working try gobbler yelps and clucks. Put the time in,find a good spot they frequent, sit and call, and you'll do fine!!!

THANK YOU GOBBLER GETTER. I WILL "FEEL THEM OUT" FOR A DAY OR SO AND THEN TRY THE GOBBLER CLUCKS AND YELPS. USUALLY I HAVE PERIODS OF TIME WHEN BIRDS ARE VISIBLE AQND WITHIN HEARING RANGE. THE EFFECTS OF CALLING CAN BE EASILY SEEN. WHEN THE TRIP IS OVER I WILL REPORT BACK
