870 20" barrel?
« on: May 09, 2018, 11:52:05 PM »
I'm tired of packing my NEF 10 gauge around and thought about jazzing up my old 870 sp.  I found a 20" rem choke barrel with rifle sights for cheap and was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this setup, or if this barrel is too short.  Also, which choke and TSS shell should I try if Y'all have any recommendations.

thanks: Walker

Not an 870, but I switched to a 20" barrel on my Mossy 500 a few year ago and never looked back. Absolutely love it. And noticeably easier to handle in the woods I hunt than the old 28" barrel. Also handier in my pop-up blind in which the 28"er would protrude out the window and was cumbersome to pull in and point out another window when the dang gobblers came from the sides etc. Patterns every bit as tight as the longer barrel with the same choke tube.

Be well

I ended up ordering an 18 1/2” Carlson’s barrel with sights. Might be a touch on the short side but I guess I’ll find out.

Sounds cool! Let us know how it goes. I have an old fixed choke barrel I've been thinking about cutting back to 18" and threading for choke tubes. I think a short barrel like that would be handy for sure! Especially in the thick stuff I hunt.

I have an 18.5" Winny 1300 and had a Benelli M2 with an 18.5" and with the right choke/load combo they are deadly. I shoot TSS 8's out of mine, but with 3" Long Beards the 1300 gives killing patterns too. Run Indian Creek and SumToy chokes in those.

Here’s a pic of a 870 with 20” barrel. This is a 8x9 3 1/2 load running 2.25 oz with a Jebs .650
