Nebraska Success
April 21, 2011, 10:56:17 PM
Just got back from my western Nebraska public land hunt. I made the 3 3/4 hour drive from my home anticipating decent weather for a day or two. The day turned out beautiful although the temp in the morning was 20 degrees. Not much action for the first three hours in the morning but worked a bird about 10:30 but he hung up at 60 yards or so and decided he didn't like something and left. About 1:30 I got an answer from my old reliable Lynch Long Beard box. It was a ways off and across a deep canyon but I knew the area well and worked my way to him. I hit the call when I thought I was fairly close and he answered. This happened a couple of more times but it didn't sound like he was coming in. My inpatience got to me and I started to move when I saw two beautiful fans coming down the ridge to me. I was caught in an awkward position but wasn't going to chance moving. Just then I saw a couple of hens coming right to me with the gobblers in tow. The gobblers went to the the right but my 20 ga. Beretta was not pointing in that direction. I made a quick decision to swing slowly before it was too late. The Circle-X reticle was slightly lower than I like when the 20 went off from my awkward position but I can't complain. At 27 yards the Hevi-13 7's reduced his beard from a brush to a thin rope! The other gobblers and hens took off running while my bird flopped a little. The 2 1/2 hr hike back to the truck wasn't easy in the country I hunt. I just hope my 67 year old legs can continue to do it for years to come. It was a great hunt and a great time in the Cornhusker state.
If I had a dollar for every gobbler I thought I fooled I'd be well off!

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
