So today was my first day of the season to actually get out to the woods with gun in hand. I had the boy out youth day but that's been it. Daylight found me sitting in a living room watching my host make breakfast. Fried potatoes and onions, deer sausage and eggs were on the menu. We ate and talked for a bit. Then several cups of coffee  were drank. A full hour after daylight we finally got our guns and worked our way to the woods. We started out like always sitting and calling for a bit and moving on. My host talked too loud, walked slow and noisily and doesn't hear the greatest but it didn't matter. We raised one gobble in 3.5 hours and several miles in the Wv mountains. I called loudly and often and just had a blast. By noon we had made our way back to the house and just sat on the deck and talked for a few more hours.
All in all it was a fine trip. I had relived stories from the last forty years on that piece of ground we hunted and witnessed another beautiful day in the woods. Upon leaving my host thanked me for coming down and getting out in the woods with him.

My host was my 84 year old grandad. He is very dear to me and I cherish the times we have spent together. These trips give me perspective and an appreciation for where I came from and what I am. I needed this and had a great day that wasnt really about turkeys. We were chasing something that we will not hold forever. I am honored to have him and hopefully we can continue this tradition for a few more years.

That is awesome. Those memories that you make with him a priceless. Better than any gobbler any day for sure.

That's what it's all about a Gobbler killed together is just a little more icing on the cake. You will both remember your hunt forever. I hope you have many more together...

I have lost some close people in my life,a best friend a few years ago,my cousin 12 years ago and my grandfather in 1997 when I was 17,I miss him every day. This story is awesome,I do the same thing with my dad who is 62 and has had some serious health issues the last 7-8 years. He is as hardcore as I am when it comes to hunting and I hope to spend another 20 + years hunting with him....good luck this spring and hope you get many more days with your grandfather.

I wish my grandfather was still around...  You are a lucky man, and I am glad to hear that you are aware and appreciate the time!
Did I do that?

Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.

Yep, can't beat that.  I miss my grandad.  We never got to turkey hunt, but we walked many a mile in the mountains of Boone county WV squirrel hunting.   I hope y'all get to do it for several more years.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

I could taste those fried taters as you were telling the story.  Did some some deer and turkey trips to Ritchie county WV with my neighbor to his home place in the HOLLERS and can still hear him telling stories of growing up.  He's long gone but those memories are  PRICELESS!    Enjoy him while you can, that was an AWESOME HUNT!
