Oregon Early Bird
April 19, 2018, 02:03:49 PM
After hunting Sunday and returning to work without a turkey in hand it was time to try again this morning out here in southern Oregon. Oregon has a few different species available but mostly Rios, which are what I was after today. An early 4:30 alarm and a 40min ride to the spot rewarded me with some time to plan a strategy since I hadn't roosted a bird. My plan was to park at the BLM gate and ride back into a spot about 2 miles down the road, but my plans changed as soon as I crossed into the public land. A bird gobbled down the slope from me about 1/4 mile from the truck so I pedeled to a high spot on the road and blew a locator only to find the bird roosted in a tree 25 yards off the road, oops! I pedeled by and then circled back through the woods to within 100yards or so of the still gobbling Tom. He flew further down the slope but started walking back up towards me, but, not before two other toms and a set of hens came into sight. I adjusted slightly and waited for the two strugglers to come into range. It took no time for those birds to run into range, my xtrema 2 with with wlb 3.5" #6's did their work and my day was over by 6:32! He is a 2yo with typical 3/4" spurs and an average beard.
Riding back to the gate I struck up a conversation with another hunter who was arriving a little too late to capitalize on the early morning gobbles I'd been on. I passed on the best info I had and wished him well. Great, sunny, warm day in Oregon. The birds all cut up into fajita meat and into breasts that are coated in salt and pepper with a lemon slice. Those are sealed in bag awaiting the sous vide bath later this evening. It's about the best way I've cooked a turkey. The method is foolproof can't over cook and dry out. Can crisp the skin in a pan, I usually pass on that and turn the breasts into my sandwich meat.

Congratulations on a great hunt and enjoying a sunny day in Oregon! Well done. Your recipe sounds tasty too.
