Doubled Down in Virginia
April 17, 2018, 08:46:53 AM
After a less than encouraging start , I can't believe the weekend my son and I had. Started off on some public land and got in early only to see a flashlight heading into where I had planned to go. Went to spot B and never heard a bird a light and we could hear a LOT of territory. Cut our loses and headed to and buddies property only to be greeted to a truck spreading fertilizer. Told my son it was a good thing as it would push the birds off the field for us to set up . Truck pulled out at 7:50 and I got a far off response at 8:10 . Answered from 125 yards at 8:25 then we see a head, then two heads, and watched them march in to the Avian Jake and we 3,2,1, boomed at 8:30 . Hugs and high fives , our first true double since I took him to Texas his senior year in HS. Sunday found us on his grandmothers property where we heard multiple birds but quite a ways off. Had a bird answer about 200 yards off just before 7 , 15 minutes later he says I hear drumming and I spotted the bird 5 yards inside the planted pines. Bird came out and strutted gleaming in the sunlight all the way to within 20 yards till he dropped the hammer. More hugs and high fives then made a loop chasing other birds. Got gobbles and had another bird within 125 yards but he got quite and drifted off. Headed home and went behind my house on my property and eased up to one of mu clover fields to see a big strutter , another longbeard ,a jake a 2 hens. Spent 30 minutes creeping to within 25 yards of the field and set down. First yelp got cut off and one of the hens heads our way scolding me .She passes within 15 yards and 20 minutes later the rest follows suit . Big bird got to 27 yards before the hen and jake spotted me and let a a putt and I adjusted aim and the double double was done.Incredible two days and as great as the hunting was , the time spent with my son was even better , he graduates college in three weeks and time spent together is a blessing . Sorry for the long post but I'm still fired up and don't see us topping this one anytime soon.
