Suggest some books?

Turkey Hunting, A One Man Game by Kenny Morgan (The digital version is a real deal).

The Wild Turket and Its Hunting by E.A. McInhenny free on Google Books.  You can download it to your computer or other device.  For the most part the Turkey Prehistoric and Historic chapters can be ignored.  The book was written primarily from the field notes of Charles L. Jordan, a great turkey hunter.

I guess I am old but I really prefer to read books in paper form, something about holding the book and the smell of the paper that I like. I am also into comic books and have read a few from Marvel using their digital format but it is just not the same thing to me.

If you're interested in reading a compilation of entertaining turkey hunting stories, Bad Birds by Jim Spencer is a good read (not as serious as all the other books that are going to be mentioned).

Thank you for those suggestions. I am going to have to wait a while to get those, they are all around the $100.00 range right now. The last one sold for $13.50 earlier this week, I intended to bid on it but got pulled away from the computer.

I will second that. One of the very few "professional" hunters I will pay attention to. Listening to one of his podcasts as I type this. He is a very intelligent and well spoken fellow that addresses the deeper issues of hunting and conservation. He would be the type of fellow I would happily share a tree with.

I'll 2nd "Turkey Hunting A One man Game" by Kenny Morgan. Its a good book both informative and entertainment wise. I have an extra signed copy in mint condition you can buy if you want to pay way too much for it. 

There are informative books and entertaining type books about turkey hunting.

I like to read informative books a lot. Learning about the biology and habits helps me get in the head of a wild turkey...see the world as they do. And I want to know as much about the hen, or more as the gobbler. Some books I would suggest are.

"Illumination In The Flatwoods" by Joe Hutto. This one is also entertaining to read.

"The Book of the Wild Turkey" and The Voice and Vocabulary of the Wild Turkey" both by Lovett Williams.

I also like to read studies done on the wild turkey. These are pretty dry reading but can be informative. They are done by various state game departments and their biologists. Some I have are.

"Wild Turkey Ecology and Management in Wisconsin" (Wis DNR),

"Ecology and Management of Rio Grande Turkeys in the South Platte River Corridor" (Colorado Parks & Wildlife). Both those are pamphlets but should also be available online.

"The Wild Turkey in South Dakota (South Dakota Dept of Game & Fish), that's in book form, but may be online also...dunno.

There are other studies from various states online also, you just have to do a search and read what you think might have some good info.

A lot of the information you read in studies doesn't have much to do with "how to kill a wild turkey". But as you gain knowledge you can start to put together what a turkey's life is like. A side benefit is, at least IMO, you gain a respect for the wild turkey and what it takes for them to survive in the wild.


Entertaining type books are fun to read and you can pick up some good hunting info. You have to remember though that some of these older books were written when not much had been studied about the wild turkey. Some contain myths or "not quite true" info that should be taken with a grain of salt.

Tom Kelly as mentioned is pretty good. His first 8 books are better than the ones after those IMO.

"Double Gobble" by Bobby Dale is a good one. His next 2 books...not so much.


Some "How Tow" books.

"Practical Turkey Hunting Strategies" by Ray Eye.

"Turkey Calls & Calling" and "Fall & Winter Turkey Hunter's Handbook" both by Steve Hickoff.


Don't neglect learning about the fall and winter of wild turkeys just because you may not intend to hunt them at those times. Again, knowing about the whole life of a wild turkey helps you put it all together.
