Doing a little looking on Google Earth and trying to determine the distance from certain listening spots to likely roosting areas on a property I have access to hunt.  I am curious as to how far most of you believe you can hear a turkey gobbling?  Keep in mind I am talking about "on the roost".  Let's just say it's optimum conditions, low humidity and low or no wind conditions - early season in hardwoods or mixed hardwood/pine timber with little to no leaves on the trees.

I know my hearing is not what it used to be.  I can often times hear them gobbling, but coursing them can sometimes be difficult for me when they are off at long distances.

I appreciate the input.

I live in some ridge and valley area and can hear birds in the 1mile+ range. Like you say optimum conditions.

I have heard birds at a little over a mile.

Easily a mile in the right spot with the right conditions.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

A mile depending on what ear I am listening out of. ;D

I heard one gobbling his head off on the ground a few years ago. I listened to him long enough so I started walking. I walked and walked and walked. I got close and killed him. Measured it on the map from where I started and it was right at 1 mile. I was already a good piece from the truck but I didn't mind carrying that gobbler all the way back

Perfect conditions.  Now, maybe a little less than a mile.  Used to be a mile.  Had my future son in law with me this morning and he heard a bird gobble, twice, before I heard him on #3.

From a hill top in East KY at least several miles away. Really depends on conditions though.
