Hunting open country long beards

What's your guy's best tips or tactics for hunting open ground with little timber or less timber? I'm used to hunting missouri hardwoods in almost all timber. Very little open ground. My fiancé and I will be headed to Kansas this year with archery equiptment and I'm very excited to try our hand at some new territory and different hunting. Do you use a blind and decoys? Run and gun? Wait em out? What's your favorite method for those open country gobblers?

Use a blind if there's not much cover. I use decoys most of the time. Good luck.

As a Rio hunter I'll stress, use your binoculars.  Another tip is when glassing do it from behind and beside a bush on the shaded side.  I personally set up anywhere there's cover from fence rows, cedar bushes, bottom timber... And some sort of"kick stand" vest or turkey lounger is nice.

Gooserbat, what areas are you focusing on when glassing open country? Hill tops for strutters? Brush or cover for resting turkeys? Shade?

All those.  I also look for actively gobbling turkeys if I'm trying to set up on a bird in open ground.

Bowhunting open country my blind is rarely set up close to anything, a little long distance glassing should get you to where they like to go.

Though my best spot was where 3 draws came together, I think just sitting there with no calls or decoys you could have killed a bird most days if you had patience, best spot I ever had that I no longer have access too.

See you said archery, then a blind may be the ticket.


If you are going to with shotguns and go mobile, make sure you get something to sit back against like the kickstand vest and even a gun bipod. Depending on where you are there may not be any trees just some cedars to get against and no trunk to rest against.

The bipod will save you if you are not against a tree because it is hard to hold the gun up when you are not leaning back on a tree.
