Road Yelpers & Hootie Hoo's
February 24, 2018, 01:31:31 PM
Went to one of my local public land spots early this morning to do some listening, then some walking. Wasn't surprised to see the road yelpers and hootie hoo's were out in full force. You could hear one guys truck a mile away. I heard him several times shut the motor off and give a couple hoots as he was easing down the road . Then he would give it several series on a box call, crank up and ease on down the road to repeat. I heard several featherless owls and turkeys this morning. Saw my share of N"WTF" and Yeti stickers too. It is public so I just chuckle and enjoy the free entertainment.
If I'm not back in five minutes, wait longer!

Couple of years ago I watched a fellow come roaring by on his four wheeler. Stopped and let a few yelps rip on a box call. Never even shut the engine off. He then proceeded to roar off. It is entertaining though.

It's already started here as well. No need to turn off the truck or radio they'll not be stopped long enough for an answer. I like to shake a box call at them sometimes makes them feel like there real hunters
If you make everything easy how do you know when your good at anything?

I'm going out tomorrow to throw life vests out for our turkeys. I'm tired of rain.
And I hope I don't run into any road callers.
Love to hunt the King of Spring!

That's the way it is here throughout the season. If they ever find one near a road, they will stop every single time they ride by that spot and good, crow call or yelp. I had it happen to me last spring near a road. A guy came by, stopped, got out and owl booted a few times and the Turkey gobbler and they guy rode off. He said he just wanted to see if he was in there

I like those Gobblers that roost next to the roads on NF land they keep a lot of the mouth breathers circling around next to the roads and leaves me free to hunt alone. They never kill them road roosters either but they'll spend the season trying lol.

I just pull up to a spot...roll down my window, give them a few calls on the squealing hen...if I don't hear anything I move to another spot....I can cover alot of ground that way and still be back before the bisquits come out of the oven.

Yeah, I hate those guys that use locator calls! I wish they would all stop.

That's all par for southern Missouri is welll. Only other thing I would add is many of them won't just stop at striking them from the road. Seems a lot of folks don't own calendars and believe if they gobble season must be open. I've heard a many of shotguns while out listening before season.

A few year ago I was listening to a gobbler sounding off on his own. I could hear road hunters stop and hootie hoo or howl a few times and then drive off. A few minuets later the old boy would crank up on his own. This happened 2 or 3 times before shooting time that morning.
Spring turkey hunting, I love it so. FREEDOM IS NOT FREE

Had 2 knuckleheads a few years back that were scouting and calling while Harrison and I were working a bird one youth weekend. Cranking up the box call!
They scared the bird off and pissed me right off!!!
Fortunately, Harrison was able to double with his grandfather later in the season on his biggest bird yet!
Part of life I guess.....

I love it, while these clowns call from the road many times getting birds to respond I am on the back side set up already and killing them. My cousins first bird he ever killed there was a guy owl hooting from the road at it just before he shot!
