I am wanting to start using a trumpet. In your opinion who makes some of the best out there?

Buice or Austy Bott.  Both are real gentlemen and very good to deal with.

I'd put Mero or KP on the same level as Buice

Frank Cox for sure, Ralph Permar, Robert Glover, Matt McLain, Billy Buice, Herb Hornstra. David Hodgkin's, Ernie Fetters, Zach Farmer and Austy Bott just to name a few. Price range and waiting list vary.

Hornstra and Permar in my opinion are the most consistant

West Augusta

Added to the list above,  Del Crow and Billy MacAllister.

The differences in builds and players means what is the best for you can be different for any one particular person who replies to this thread. There is also the unpredictable question of whether the turkeys like the one you like the best. There's build quality, playability for you specifically and response from turkeys to consider. The answer for a person comes from trial and experience.

Add Lee Chadwick to that list too.

Well, I only have one and Doug Morgan made it. I'm very proud to have it.

New to the trumpet world myself, with a year and a half under my belt. Lots of excellent recommendations here. Honestly, I don't think I would get on a waiting list and spend $250 for my first trumpet.

There are several call makers that can provide an excellent quality trumpet for less ($100- $150) with shorter wait time. You still get a quality trumpet that sounds great, without breaking the bank right away - to see if you are going to put forth the effort to master it. Most will provide a decent return on your investment if you decide to give it up and sell the trumpet.

Brian Mero
Kenny Pendelahore (KP)
Anthony Ellis (AGE)
Lee Chadwick (Misfire)
Matt McLain

These are just some that I am familiar with and played and / or own. Like howl said - it's a very personal preference for what will work best for you. For example, I ran a Lee Chadwick (Misfire) trumpet alongside a Buice. I ordered one from Lee (Misfire) afterwards... but that's just me. Good luck, stick with it, have fun!

I just got one from Lee that is very easy to run.  Can't not add him to the list.
I'll post some pictures soon.

So many great trumpet makers out there. I have calls from most of them. One name that I do not see on the above lists is Mike Williams, aka MKW. I don't think he is making calls now but if you get a chance to obtain one of his, go for it.
