2018 Turkey Season Prep

The Georgia spring season ended today. At the end of each season I start preparing for the next. Over the last few years, I have chosen to spend the year from the end of one season to the beginning of the next learning to use a call type proficiently enough to hunt with. Three seasons ago I spent the year learning to use a trumpet call. Two seasons ago I set out to learn to use pot calls. This past year I was determined to learn to use a mouth call. I am not where I want to be with a mouth call yet, so I am going to spend the next 10 months trying to get better with this type call. Does anyone else do anything similar to this and if you do, what will you be working on to make you a better turkey hunter come opening day 2018?

When I was a kid I constantly had a mouth call on me, all year. Took a few years til I felt proficient. I think calls today are just easier to run but props to you for making the effort

Except keeping my eyes open for turkeys and new locations to hunt them as I travel across the state, I'll switch modes once season ends and everything is put away. There are too many other things to think about between now and about February.

I'm supposed to get some exercise and research for a trip to OK next April. What I will really do is just go fishing and maybe set up a new gun.

I mainly use three calls, box, pot and mouth call. In reserve I carry and use a lonesome hen push call. I am not really interested in using every call on the market although I am fairly good with a wingbone and trumpet. Mainly, I will practice with my three main call as mentioned above to maintain proficiency. I also work on my shotgun a bit to insure I have optimum patterns at different ranges. While it seems everyone is focused on Spring Turkey season I have on several occasions called in Gobblers in the Fall. This can be frustrating and time consuming but well worth it when he sticks his head up. On a side note I hunt coyotes with #4 LB much of the summer and use a 243 the rest.
Everyone wants to be successful - some just need help.
