Mossberg 500 failure

To make a long story short I talked myself into taking my 20 ga mossberg 500 this morning since I just choked it up, and have yet to get a 20 ga bird, and left my 870 12 in the truck. Got on a bird first thing this morning on public land and he came right in to twenty yards. I try and pull the trigger and it feels like the safety is on but it's clearly off, then I thought maybe the action is slightly open, nope, I tried to pull that trigger one hundred times I bet and the bird walked off gobbling. The trigger is still locked up and the safety is hard to move. Anybody else ever had problems with mossberg? I think it is something to do with the safety, I hate the thumb safety and currently hate that gun, I've lost trust in it now. Lesson of the day, Take the 870!

Had one to do something like that. Powder will build up behind it. Take her apart and get ya a good light and look down in there.

I agree, don't like the safety on the moss..500 ... i have one moss 500/12 ga.   but i will never own another one...all Rem.. 870 , 20 ga. or 12 ga.   The only reason i have this one is it was a special addition and just a few made....

Always ..always ...cycle action pull trigger cycle again then load and ready to hunt.Learned the habit in the Army the very last thing you want is a malfunction at the wrong time.I also keep 870 clean and strip it down and clean it couple times per season especially after rain or I shoot a few times.Lesson learned ...the positive thing is the gobbler wasn't spooked.

Mine did same last dove season after I had just recently tightened stock bolt.  After an autopsy I found that the internal stock skeleton had cracked and the stock bolt had entered too far into the action.   New skeleton and stock bolt from Mossberg good as new about $20 fix.  Safety is stiff and a pain, have an old one that safety is loose and goes on after every shot OH WELL.  But it's lightweight and can thump a gobbler at 30 yards and under with HW 7's.

Actually had the same thing happen to me a few years ago with my 500...Walked into a spot I've had good luck in.....as I'm standing on top of the ridge looking at the tree I was sitting under when I filled a previous tag... I had  a bird gobble close...I sat down, mouth called a couple times and within a minute had that longbeard coming walking into range......I tried to squeeze the trigger but it felt like the safety was still on. I feverishly worked the safety back and forth, continuing to try to fire at this bird with no luck. I cracked the action open and slide it back shut, still the same result. I slowly opened and ejected the shell, rechambered...still wouldn't fire....Then 2nd tom walks behind the 1st and I'm going crazy trying to get this gun to fire...suddenly it did.

When I got home I tore the gun down and gave it a good cleaning. There was some debris inside, but nothing was broken that I could find. Not sure what was going on inside that gun, but I haven't  had any issues since.

Its a helpless feeling when your gun wont fire and you have a bird in range....I couldn't believe it wouldn't go off...and I still cant believe those birds hung around and let me get away with all that moving....all I can come up with is it was late in the season and there was enough foliage to block their line of sight....It was crazy.

Man.. I just got a brand new 535 turkey to add to the collection.  Now you guys have me worried, my gun will get thrown straight into the river if that ever happens..

bought a mossy 835 new in 2011,cost me two gobbler that spring,sometimes it would go off sometimes just click......good shooting gun when it goes off but it's never went back to the turkey woods sence then.

I wonder how common this issue is? And it Mossberg ever did anything to fix?
To keep things in prospective, there are 10mil + mossbergs guns out there with the top safety...

I've never had any issues with my mossberg shotguns. I've the the 835 and 935 and my son has the 500, I love the safetys on the mossberg especially where there located at there very easy for a beginning hunter to locate them also.

My daughter had the same trouble dove hunting with the 500.

I've never had an issue with it though.

Well I know that new safetys tend to be sticky for sure.
