What kind of birds?

Was able to take 2 birds this past weekend in Nebraska.

Was going to register 1 or both with the NWTF.
I know Nebraska has Merriams as well as Rios and some hybrids.

I'm a Tennessee guy and barely know Easterns so I figured I'd come here and ask what are these?

If location helps I was right smack in the middle of the state.



Also I have never registered a bird with the NWTF so any tips in doing so is appreciated.
I have printed off the registration form but thats as far as I got.  Been playing catch up at work.

I don't think it matters. I registered both of my toms I shot in Nebraska and the NWTF recognizes the hybrid also as a Merriam. Probably doesn't matter in the eyes of the NWTF.  You can email them if you'd like.

I shot mine in the Northwest corner of the state.

Once you get below the Northern Pine Ridge you should be dealing with mostly hybrids. The further south, the more Rios. My gun doesn't care so hybrids tend to flop just like a true blood

What's the purpose of registering the birds?  Do they use that to collect data?

Whatever subspecies is most resembles. You may be to for East for Merriam. Merriam turkey have the shortest legs and therefore shorter beards.

Nebraska really seems to run mostly mutts... even in the same flock I saw birds that looked merriam, rio, eastern.... I think the only thing to do is kill them one tag at a time until the whole mess is sorted

Congrats! Two fine birds. Register them as dead gobblers, all that matters really.

Sure was fun hunting a new place, seeing new terrain, and hunting something different than a hardwood bottom.

Yeah I feel the same way about out of state hunts!
