It's going to take several people getting killed to get it outlawed in more states. That'd be a good way for someone to start the process of changing the laws to where you actually have to hunt.

I did it on the last day of an out of state hunt last year. The gobbler was in the middle of a 100 or so acre cut corn field. And behind him was a lake. I didn't really stalk him though, I just threw up a fan and he came sprinting 300 yards. I felt 100% safe in the situation. 9 out of 10 times I wouldn't have tried it, but the situation was perfectly safe.

To me it is a idiotic thing to do anywhere public or private land North, South, East or West and anyone who attempts it is just asking for trouble.I chucked Cabela's and Mack's Prairie wings spring turkey catalogs in the trash when I found they both had a couple pages dedicated to turkey crawling.

I wouldn't do it. But you're still more likely to die driving to work than hunting, just don't see the need to up the risk of dying while hunting.

In 2009 I had a guy shoot my foam jake decoy on public land in florida. Last was the last time I have ever use any kind of male turkey decoy on Public land. Still could get shoot today for many other reasons, just cutting down odds where I can. There are a lot of wannabe turkey hunters out there. Some dropping bread crumbs to find there way back out of the woods. And you are thinking of using What; don't do it.

For the life of me, I do not understand why this is a thing. NO, YOUR FRIEND SHOULD NOT USE THAT METHOD ON PUBLIC LAND, much less private land. As many have said, you don't know who is on your land (poachers/trespassers/etc...). I will never tell somebody how they should hunt, UNLESS IT IS THIS METHOD. In case you have not noticed, I do not like or care for this method of hunting. It is not hunting; it is an accident waiting to happen.

People get shot every year because someone "heard a turkey" in the bushes and then saw the bushes move. Go read a few turkey hunting books, seems like every other one I read has a story about someone close to the author or the author being shot.

I only hunt public land and it would be very unsafe there!! I also pack an orange hat like another member here on this post.

I have said it before, and I will say it again... The human capacity for stupidity never ceases to amaze and surprise me...
If I am reading the question correctly "Would it be safe to pretend to be a legally shootable turkey on public land?" My answer would be, probably about as safe as wearing deer antlers on your head during deer season in public land...
Gotta' think the OP is doing a bit of "fishing" on this thread...
Did I do that?
Fly fishermen are born honest, but they get over it.
