The barrel was separate and in its own plastic "sock." I was not particularly impressed with the packaging of the one they sent me. However, it was in very good condition besides the two craters in the bore. I really hope the replacement is in as good a shape as yours is. From what I understand Bud's only exchanges firearms once and then they refund your money if there is still a problem. They also said they will not inspect the replacement before they ship it to my FFL as I requested. They said they ship it as they receive it from the manufacturer.
