Mouth call + tree calling HELP

Coming into to my 3 season and after last season I was determined to use a mouth call this coming season. Months in the making I've kept one in my mouth everyday.  Let to very ill wife, some angry co-workers, and some not so happy next door hotel guests when I'm off at work.  When they went on sale after last year's season I started buying them right up.  Got about 80 now.  I'm proud of myself with how much confidence practice has given me.

One question.  I can hit most every call pitches but don't know if it's the type of reed (combo cut) I like the best but I just can't hit those low soft tree yelps.  Is that the wrong reed cut to be trying to tone it really down?  If so what can I try different, different reed cut, different call itself,  or one with more or less reeds.  I'm not expecting to stand on stage with Billy Argus but I sure would love to sound half that good.

Trust me I'll practice each and every suggestions given.  Thanks

For those low soft tree yelps, i just use a double reed mouth call or a slate call... You would do yourself a favor and put aside those 80, mouth calls and pick you out 4 -6 of these that you can use... 80 mouth calls is not going to make you a better turkey caller...

Closed, cupped hands over your mouth, lips closed more than usual, can really help out getting that subtle, hollow note.

Just call to him on the ground.

Makes sense.  I'll try that thanks.

Seriously!! 80 mouth calls!!!?

I've had better success forgetting the tree yelp. Siting on the ground making a tree yelp doesn't make much sense, they can tell where you are.

There's 2 ways to look at it. Calling em on the ground or I may offer a few tree calls, n wait for him to fly down. Once down, a fly down n wait. The tree calls if you choose can be accomplished many ways. A trough call or purr pot is golden. I use my hands to muffle sound w a mouth call n I don't go nuts if I do it at all.
If you call him too much in a tree he may stay there strutting or gobbling. That'd be a sure way to get another hunter to move your way or you'll hear a hen coming to him, when he sees her he'll fly down n it's often game over. Think of the situation before you use them. Just because we have a skill set we're anxious to let work for us doesn't mean that's gotta be today.

if you can't call softly, it's likely you're not pushing with your diaphragm.

In general, calls made with thinner reed materials are easier to make soft calls with.  Older calls that have lost some of their tension also tend to be easier to control volume.

Other tricks, if you have any mouth calls that you are not happy with, are to bend the call frame to loosen tension on the reeds, stretch the reeds with your fingers to decrease tension, tear/cut off part of the long reed of a call and/or make new or additional cut in the reeds.  Experimentation with otherwise unusable calls can work wonders.

Try to cluck or Yelp with your mouth closed. Now ever so slightly crack your lips open and try again.

Little practice you'll get it, soft muffled clucks and yelps.

I like to use a tree Yelp or soft clucking to get his attention. But once I know He's  heard me I'm done till he's on the ground.
