filming your own hunts.....

I know theres a few people that fiddle around with filming or trying to film their own hunts.....anyone got any tips?
Im gonna give a shot and hopefully get enough practice in and get to learn as much as I can about the camera before the spring turkey hunt arrives....should be an interesting few months....hopefully can get out for a few coyote hunts and work the camera a little soon....just got another couple of things to buy for the camera...feel free to post your vids....

Looks like you have great start! Canon XA30? Manfrotto Tripod and head? Manfrotto also has leveling head which make for quick sets. Looks like you are still getting it together. Couple of things I have learned over the years. Shoot everything get as much raw footage as you can and take several takes of intros and after the shot, camera angles and backdrop. Another I started with too small of SD cards get minimum of 64gb and batteries a couple extra will not hurt. I have a Rode mic for mine and Sennheiser for the wireless, Varizoom, and a "protection" lens so you cant scratch you cameras lens. If you're looking at tree arms too Muddy has a few great ones and look into Fourth Arrow Camera arms. I wrapped mine in camo.

MK M GOBL already said it but it's with worth hearing again.  Get as much raw footage as you can get of everything, not just the setting there calling in a bird.  The sunrise, getting set up, walking, give a play by play of what your plan is, etc.  I started last spring and made the mistake of not getting enough or any of the footage that makes a hunt feel like a hunt.  I would get on youtube or watch hunting shows that you like and focus on what they are filming to help put together the final piece you are watching.  Take note of what you like and remember to get that footage when you're hunting.

Also, get extra SD cards and extra batteries.

Can this be done using a Contour or GOPro effectively? I am assuming with the expensive camera equipment the footage is much better and the picture quality/sound as well.

Take the first good shot you are given in range, whether the camera is on him or not. Just my advice.

The "fish y" lens on the gopro will make things look really far away.  Tactacam makes a great, small POV camera that has a different lens set up.  It can mount to your gun, bow etc.

This is what I tried last turkey season. Worked ok, but if you watch my hunting video you can see the camera wood get out of focus when a limb or twig got in view.
The video below is the camera I'm going with this year. It's the older model Canon HFG 20.
Now if I can only figure how to learn to use it. When I pan, the background gets blurry as heck.

Agree with this! GoPro's were not developed for the Hunting Market they were made to use for "Extreme Sports". Not to say they don't have there place with our use, but that ends up being just B roll, secondary shots. We do set-up GoPros to catch some footage. We also run a Tactacam 4.0 for that POV of the shot, and if you are looking to just catch the hunt for your own viewing that maybe all you need. Also a lot easier to carry the Tactacam than the other setup. We do film for "Outdoor Shows" and quality of that footage does make a difference.

Are you only self filming? or do you film others or they film you? I self film at times but mostly we have 2 out at a time.

Does the 20 have a manual focus ring, when were in the timber that comes in to play as the "Auto" focus mode will try to focus on other objects. Which works fine in a field situation, my camera also has a tracking feature to keep your subject in focus.

Hi,
Yes, I self film. The camera in the first video is a Sony Handy Cam. It has no manual focus, that's why I upgraded to the Canon G 20.
The Canon G 20 does have a manual focus ring and you can set it on auto focus to if you're field hunting.
I use 2-3 cameras when filming. GoPro, Contour and the camera mounted on my Caldwell or crossbow.

Yes sir It's the Canon XA 30 and a Manfrotto tripod....looks like you got a awesome setup there....
I just need a shotgun mic and a lanc.....and some experience....love the camp wrap....vice me any tips you have and video...
