Remington 870 28" and 26" barrels with 3 chokes.

Hello all,

  Not sure if this would go in this forum but I wasn't sure where else to put it.
At CDNN Sports website they have the two 870 barrels in the subject on sale for $71.99. They come with an Imp, X Full and Skeet chokes. One issue might be for some that they are threaded for Winchester and Browning (invector) chokes. Seems odd to me that they would do that but whatever.

I talked to a customer service rep there this morning and he said the barrels are the same dimensions as a normal Remington 870. Including the bore dimensions. However, this particular CS rep didn't really seem to know what I was talking about and pretty much seemed to be faking his way thru the conversation. Also, one tip to the CDNN Sports management would be acting lessons for the phone reps. This guy did a pretty poor job of acting happy to be answering questions...

Just received my barrel. That was pretty fast shipping! However, I may have found out why they are $71.99(plus shipping). There is a decent size burr on the ledge that the choke tube would rest on. I tried to pick it out with a softer metal pick and it will not pick out. It is in the shot column enough that I would think it will effect the pattern for the worse. I wrote to their customer support. Hopefully they won't make this a painful situation...

Did it have the invector choke system in it?

I expect that they'll handle that situation very well.
I think I understand where the burr is but would like to be sure. It's in the counterbore and on the shoulder where the gas seal of a choke would seat, correct? I know that barrel came with chokes. Was a choke installed? If so, did it come out easily? Were you able to reinstall it or another one?
From what I read, it must stick out into the bore when a choke is installed, is that correct?
Have you tried installing an extended choke tube, one that you can work in and out by hand?
You might be able to apply just enough pressure by tightening the choke to cut off the the burr and then be able to extract it.
Of course you may just want to have a replacement barrel from them and I'd understand that.

Yes the burr is internal on the edge of that counterbore shoulder and protrudes into the shot path.  Ok, now I have a newbie question. What is the diameter of that counterbore ledge? Does that conical shape's geometry make all the difference? It seems like the ledge on my buddy's mossberg 500 is not nearly as noticable as you are looking down the bore from that side when a choke is installed. You can run a pick down mine and hit a definite ledge and stop on it. You can with his as well with his full choke and pretty much skip over a hump instead of stopping on it.  Also, I do not have an extended choke for it to try and de-burr it. Instead of messing with it too much I am just going to try and exchange it.

The counterbore can diameter can vary from gun to gun and manufacturer to manufacturer but normally it will be similar +/- for a given choke thread type.

As long as the gas seal of the choke does not extend over the shoulder, you're okay.

I expect that you'll have no trouble whatsoever exchanging that barrel. If you had a gunsmith close, he'd probably have a tool to run the threads and clean that burr out for you, kind of like what I was suggesting that you do with an extended choke tube. By screwing it in and out. the burr/debris would probably come out pretty easily.
